While champion stock
dog DSW Rex, cosigned
by Merle Newton, may
have got the most atten-
tion at Friday's 36th
Annual Stock Dog Sale
it was a puppy who
raised the most money.
As part of an annual
tradition at the Red
Bluff Bull & Gelding
Sale, a puppy was auc-
tioned off with all of the
proceedings going to
Water for Life, a non-
profit organization that
works to protect and
promote agricultural
water rights and advo-
cates for responsible
land stewardship.
The donated puppy
was auction several
times as the winning
bidders donated the dog
back to the sale to raise
even more funds.
On Friday $13,000
was raised through nine
different donations for
Water for Life.
Preceding the charity
auction DSW Rex was
one of 16 stock dogs
auctioned.
Rex scored runs of
84, 87 and 84 out of 100
to be far and away the
highest scoring dog
worked at this year's
sale.
The dogs are given
three runs to measure
their capabilities of
being a real ranch dog.
They are graded in
three categories.
Stop, a dog's ability
to go to the lead of the
lead cow, and ability to
show sufficient power to
stop and control cattle
when challenged is
graded on a scale of up
to 50 points.
The remaining 50
points are divided
between the dog's obe-
dience and control.
