8A – Daily News – Wednesday, February 16, 2011 Club to offer low cost fly fishing class in Redding The Shasta Mayflies will host a hands-on workshop at Good Time Pizza & Things, 22049 Old 44 Drive in Palo Cedro, to introduce aspir- ing fly fishers to the sport of catch-and-release Sat- urday, March 19. The women-oriented club based in Redding is dedicated to enjoying and promoting fly fishing, while protecting the blue- ribbon trout streams that are among the glories of the north state region. “There’s enough to this sport to keep a person learning and interested for years and years,” says Chrissie Clapp, one-time club president and the program’s instructor. “But all that equipment and specialized know-how can be intimidating.” Designed to de-mysti- fy the sport, Fly Fishing ABCs will introduce par- ticipants to the essentials: artificial flies, rods and reels, knots and basic casting techniques. All materials will be provided by the Mayflies, so that newcomers can learn what flies to choose, how to cast a flyline, how to "read the water" for the most likely places to find fish and how to tie the various knots needed to make sure the big one doesn’t get away. In addi- tion, attendees will receive a 44-page course summary and additional reference materials. The workshop, which runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is limited to 20 adults in order to provide all com- ers with individual atten- tion and instruction. Any- one interested can pre- register to reserve a place by sending an email with "ABCs" in the subject line to Mayflies@shasta- mayflies.org. Admission is $10, payable by check or cash at the door. Pizza will be provided. Now beginning its second decade, the Shas- ta Mayflies count more than 70 men and women among its members. Guests, too, are welcome to attend any of the group’s monthly meet- ings, featuring noted speakers on subjects ranging from destination travelogs to seminars on honing specific tech- niques for better results. In addition, the Mayflies host at least one outing a month to fabled local rivers and lakes, such as the Sacramento, the Trinity, Hat and Rock Creeks and Manzanita Lake. Veterans Memorial chapel dedication IGO — Months of hard work and dedicated effort have paid off. In spite of weeks of delays due to weather, the long awaited Veterans Memorial Chapel Building at the Northern California Vet- erans Cemetery in Igo is finally nearing comple- tion with a final push to complete the finishing touches on the chapel. Retired State Sen. Maurice Johannessen, who spearheaded this pro- ject, said that watching this building unfold has been a long labor of love as he watches the chapel near completion. “Putting this project together has been my wife Marianne's and my honor to do,” said Johannessen. “We are so grateful to our veterans and their fami- lies. It has been our honor to pay tribute to them with this memorial chapel ded- icated to serving them for many decades to come.” There will be a formal ceremony to dedicate the chapel at 11 a.m. Satur- day, March 19. The cere- mony will be followed by a reception and a memori- al service for at least 25 veterans whose remains were recovered by the Missing in America Pro- ject. The MIAP memorial service will be a multi- faith service with leaders from many local spiritual communities participat- ing. The public is invited to attend the chapel dedi- cation, as well as the reception and the MIAP memorial service.
