Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Yep, today is my once-a-year big day. Is it wrong to celebrate myself? I was driving to Raley’s last night thinking about what I wanted to see different in my life and how being one year older means I am either one year closer to what I want or one year farther away. I thought about my heart’s desire and what kept popping into my head was the word radio. About a year ago, I started real- ly chasing my dream of having my own one-hour radio talk show. In my vision, I would be able to inter- view the subjects of my You Mat- ter column live and ask them ques- tions about how they got to where they are and what makes them tick. I imagined myself sharing infor- mation with listeners about suc- cessful people and how to be, do and have. If you follow my snarky blog on http://snarkyevolution.blogspot.co m/ you can only imagine how my written life could be brought to the radio and shared with humor, sar- casm and growth. So, why now, a year later, am I no closer to the dream? I’m vulnerable. Yep, just like many of you, I am vul- nerable to nay sayers, my own neg- ativity, the road blocks and the obstacles that seem bigger than my dream. I met with Cal Hunter at KBLF who liked the idea and basically gave me a thumbs up for the show. I met with potential advertisers and pitched my idea; they seemed to like it too. What gives? I’m vul- nerable and I fall to the same negative thought everyone else does. What if I can’t get enough adver- tising dollars? What if peo- ple make fun of me? What if I choke on the air? What if no You Matter people will be on the show? Blah, Blah, Blah. So, I am one year older today and mak- ing a wish for courage. What dream have you put on hold? What is that idea that lights you on fire that you let all the neg- ativity squelch? What would you do if it was your birthday and you had a wish and you knew it could come true? Would you waste your wish by not taking the steps to see it happen? Would you listen to the voice in your head that says "you can’t, won’t, shouldn’t", or " it will never happen?" Or, will you listen to the still small voice in your head that says "I wouldn’t have given you the dream if you couldn’t achieve it?" I know I have what it takes to be a radio host. I know I can overcome my obstacles if I take it one step at a time. I know you can too. Faydra Rector You Matter Birthday presents are fun to get. Why don’t you give me one? Make a wish for yourself today. Pursue it, tell me about what you did and help encourage me through your actions. What can you accomplish and show me that is possible to dream and achieve? What would your wish be? I have the candles: Ready-Set-Blow… Faydra Rector, MA is a mental health administrator, author, public speaker, educator and life coach who lives in Red Bluff.
