Teen births and the Gospel of abstinence The Centers for Disease Control issued its annual report on teen preg- nancies for 2009 the week before Christmas and – for those concerned about the health and wellbeing of their teens – the news was an early Christ- mas gift. The numbers of babies born to mothers between the ages of fifteen and nineteen are at their lowest levels since record keeping began in 1940. The report shows thirty-nine births for every thousand teenaged girls – or a bit less than 4%. The numbers are down by about 6 % from 2008 and reflect a downward trend in most age groups, but what startled this writer with joy was the contrast between last year and the highest year for which figures exist. Ninety-six of one thousand teen girls gave birth in 1957 – the heart of the Eisenhower Administration and a tally some two and a half times that of the present generation. But even more startling was the quasi official interpretation of the data. (I say "quasi" because the study did not attempt to experimentally isolate causal factors.) Sarah Brown, chief exec of the National Campaign to Pre- vent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, declared that the economy was behind the drop in teen births. "The recession has touched us all," she allowed. What she did not allow was the fact that these numbers have been dropping for years before the current recession began. She also overlooked the fact that – traditionally – people who can least afford a surprise tend to be more rather than less sexually active during hard times. (Yes, we were in a brief recession in 1957.) There is some other reason – perhaps as inexplicable as the drop in crime during this reces- sion when secular pundits know – just ask them – that crime is caused by poverty. Stephanie Ventura co-authored the CDC study. Her take on causation is that popular culture accounts for it. She says first that the fifties were a different era, one in which women married younger, although she does not claim two and a half times more teen brides in the fifties and teen brides have always been unusual in our culture. But then she goes on to credit people like Bristol Palin – who gave birth to a child out of wedlock – and television programs like MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, which casts teen pregnancy in a harsh light. Give me a break. Studies released only last fall looked at brain chemistry and devel- opment in teens to show what parents have long suspected – young people are not motivated by conse- quences in the way that older people are. Frankly, if anything, cultural influ- ences like those cited by Ventura should lead more teen moms to abor- tion clinics – but abortions are down by about a third – and by 40 percent in the generation encompassing teens at this time. Reality is that about one third of teens between the ages of fifteen and nineteen are sexually active – down from two thirds in the eighties and nineties – according to the April 13, 2010 issues of Public Discourse in an article by Michael New. New credits abstinence education – by the way – with driving the reduction, and the CDC backs him even as they continue to seek other causes – anything but abstinence. The Guttmacher Institute – the research arm of Planned Parent- hood – reviewed twenty-four studies in 2009 and twenty of them showed that a combination of abstinence edu- cation and restrictions on public fund- ing of abortion accounted for the Syed E. Hasan, Midland Islamic Council: Diversity is the hallmark of Islam. From its early history dating back more than 1,450 years, Islam has embraced people from other countries belonging to different ethnicity or racial groups. For example, within a few years after establishment of the nascent Muslim state in Medina, Salman al-Farsi, a young man from Persia, met Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and accepted Islam. Despite being a non-Arab and belonging to a Zoroastrian priestly family, Salman al-Farsi devoted his life to the service of Islam. He is credited with the bril- liant military plan of digging a wide trench outside the perimeter of Medina that resulted in defeat of the huge army of the Quraysh in 627in the Battle of the Trench. The most important criteria for marriage among James Wilson GodTalk change in the wind. CDC concurs here as well, even while our federal government pumps six hundred million dollars into Planned Par- enthood each year to enable condom-based sex education and abortion. (Teen pregnancies went through the roof with the advent of this kind of sex education.) This is what government does with pro- grams proven a colossal failure since they were introduced nearly half a century ago. Secular bureaucrats have an unfortunate ten- dency to run from rooms whenever a faith-based alternative is mentioned – and most abstinence education is indeed faith- based. Most people outside of govern- ment and NGOs like Planned Parent- hood want only to know if a given approach is actually and practically going to benefit their families. Teach- ers of abstinence are not permitted to bring their faith overtly into the class- room if they teach in a public school – at least not at their own initiative – but they do pray for their students and they do teach armed with real science and real people experience. This is good combination for both excellence and effectiveness. Government rarely gets it, even when they supply the data. Fortunate- ly, more and more ordinary people actually do. May God bless each of you this new year. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net Voices of Faith: Is it no longer a priority to marry within your faith? Muslims are not the spouse's status, family lineage, looks nor wealth, but piety and God-consciousness. The former may be good reasons for choosing one's life mate but should not replace the latter. Marrying within one's faith is important from many considerations and, because Islam does not make any distinction on the basis of color or race, and because Islamic traditions are full of examples of inclusiveness, the question of marrying outside the faith for the sake of diversity is irrelevant. However, Islam does allow marriage between Mus- lim men and Christian or Jewish women with certain stipulations. But to safeguard Muslim women and their offspring's rights, they are not allowed to marry outside the faith unless the man accepts Islam.
