For some it is the anticipation of Valentine Day, for others it is how to celebrate the birthday of a person who was born on Feb. 29 when there is no Feb. 29 in the present month. Three out of four February’s do not have a Leap Year Birthday on the calendar. How do I know that? Mostly because my husband is one of those born on Feb. 29, we celebrate "big time" when his real birthday comes. The other three years we semi-celebrate, the "un-birthday," he prides himself of his youth by counting only the birthdays every four years. For a number of years, I appeared to be the oldest of us, finally he officially came of age and stopped telling people that I had "robbed the cra- dle" to marry him. Husband and I are going into our 57th year of wedded bliss, as we don’t subtract any days from the marriage date. There are those who chose not to describe marriage as wedded bless and at times have indicated that long term marriage are more likely to have "wedded blisters." Regardless of our birthday jokes, we always celebrate Valen- tine’s Day of which I remind read- ers that the day love is openly expressed comes on Monday, Feb. 14. We are honoring the February days by painting our walls, moving miscellaneous furniture and other household items from one room to the other. Should we be doing this at our chronologically more mature ages? Probably not. On the other hand we are often reminded to exert a little exercise each day and not become totally immobile. The Ground Hog has already popped out of his burrow on Feb. 2, seen sun- shine and has gone back to snoozing. I say enjoy the present sunny but slightly cool days and don’t com- miserate too much if rainy days invade February. As we look at our calendars, we are reminded that Pres- idents, Washington and Lincoln were February born people. Today’s schools usually declare a Presidents day and close school for at least one day. Ronald Reagan the 40th Presi- dent of the United States has been mentioned a lot lately. One of his son’s has written a book about his father having Alzheimer’s and other family members don’t agree. At any rate President Reagan was born on Feb. 6, 1911. The first Boy Scouts of America gained recognition and were incorporated, in February, 1910. Thomas Edison was born Feb. 11, 1847. What would we have done without electric lights invent- ed by this renowned inventor? On Feb. 14, 1859, Oregon became the 33rd state to join the Union. Henry Adams, an American historian was born on Feb. 16, 1838. Grant Wood, an American painter was born Feb. 14, 1891. Susan B. Anthony, American suf- frage leader, (a favorite of my mother, Marjorie Fields Hacker), was born Feb. 15, 1820. Carolyn Barber Arizona became the 48th state, Feb. 14, 1912. Oh yes, there have been a few more people than my husband who were born on Feb. 29. Marquis de Montcalm, French com- mander in Quebec, was born Feb. 29, 1712. Gioacchino Antonio Rossini, Italian compos- er, was born Feb. 29, 1792. The month of Febru- ary brings a lot of chal- lenge to us who have not read extensively about those born in February so this is our chance to look them up and put in some time checking them out. Fortunately there are a few Red Bluffians who claim the month of February as their birthdays of cele- bration. For those of us who honor such citizens, don’t forget Nancy Casey, long time Teacher-Director of Preschools, her birthday is Feb. 15. Give her a shout of "Happy Birthday" and a gigantic thank you for her long and continuing com- mitment to children and families of Tehama County. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hurcar@yahoo.com.
