BASEBALL Red Bluff Spartans By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Red Bluff High School’s Gerald Baker is headed to Iowa. The Spartans pitcher and infield- er received a scholarship from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. “I’ve always said baseball is my life, but now it is my life — base- ball and school,” Baker said shortly after signing his Letter of Intent, Tuesday. Baker was discovered by the Chargers, who play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in the NAIA, after creating a skills video for the National Collegiate Scout- ing Association. “It’s been a long journey, mom and dad were there, but he did the work,” Baker's father, Tim said. Baker said the Briar Cliff coach- ing staff contacted him after seeing his skills video and they developed a strong relationship. Two weeks ago, he went on a recruiting visit — his first trip to Iowa. “It felt right. It felt good,” Baker said. Red Bluff Spartans coach Joe Gallaty said Baker put in a lot of hard work to earn his scholarship, including attending multiple camps a year since he was 10. He described Baker as a top notch ball player, who doesn’t waste plate appearances, plays great defense and is a hard worker. “He takes a lot of responsibility for his own development,” Gallaty said. Baker said he plans on pursuing a degree in sports science and or business. “I want an education first of all. Hopefully with each year going on I can up my scholarship and earn an opportunity to play beyond col- lege,” Baker said. Baker said Briar Cliff will try him out at pitcher and third base when he gets to Iowa for fall ball. However, before his collegiate career begins there’s still a senior year of high school baseball left and Baker’s top goal before he leaves Red Bluff — a section champi- onship.
