2A – Daily News – Wednesday, February 9, 2011 Community people&events McDonald-McLaughlin Betsy Palubeski You Matter Cancer, smancer. Last week the students and faculty rallied together with regal fanfare to welcome home Betsy Palubeski, French teacher at Red Bluff Union High School. The band learned a new song, Zippity Doo Dah and the kids made posters celebrating Betsy and the hard work she has done for her wellness. A parade was held in her honor which she was able to watch from the com- fort of her front porch. Before long, the news media, facebook and youtube lit up with the tribute. Betsy’s life is a testament to us that Courtesy photo Murl and Diane McDonald of Red Bluff announce the engagement of their daughter, Dana McDonald of Durham, to Lee McLaughlin of Durham. Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. loving your work and your family is a blessing. When you love what you do and you impact people, you make a difference. If you are fortunate enough, you will have an opportunity to realize that impact, just as Betsy did as so many people passed by her home, wielding signs and blowing horns and stomping out a beat with the marching band. It makes you wonder what Betsy must be like to garner such affection from others; what qualities she pos- sesses that compelled others to cele- brate her. I asked my daughter, Kelsey, why she loves Betsy so much. Kelsey took French from Betsy all four years of high school and traveled with her to France her sophomore year. In a time of life when Kelsey was finding her way and trying to define who she was, Betsy was a kind ear, a realistic sounding board and someone who challenged her to step up her game. "She is one of my favorite teachers." "She is a remark- ably down-to-earth person who expects nothing but the best from her students and I respected that so much." I was glad as a parent that Kelsey had someone to talk to when mom was too close for comfort, too judgmental and just plain not who she wanted advice from. Knowing what Betsy meant to my admiring community is an example of what is right with Red Bluff, what is possible despite the pain. Betsy has shown love in her life and she has been loved back in a memorable way. What can be said Faydra Rector You Matter daughter, I can imagine that multi- plied by hundreds of other students and their families. How the simple and important act of being a mentor, an ear and a guidance to others shapes lives. Betsy most certainly never wanted to take on cancer in the prime of her life. I imagine that there were times when she felt really low. There is always a message in the mess. There is always beauty from ashes. Betsy’s about a woman who impacts lives so greatly that others are driven to show their love through a parade? That she matters. What can be said about a woman who lives in such a way that she inspires others to embrace cultures and learn new languages? That she matters. What can be said about a woman who is loved so dearly by her family that they support her as she tackles the tough stuff in life? That she matters.
