8A – Daily News – Saturday, February 5, 2011 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Bohrer ordination Sunday Tim Bohrer, a graduate of Red Bluff Union High School and now in his senior year as a Theology Stu- dent at California Baptist University in Riverside, will be ordained to the gospel ministry on Feb. 6. His father, Pastor John Bohrer of Antelope Home Fellowship, extends an invitation to all who know him and would like to be a part of the service, to attend morning worship at the church which meets at 401 Chestnut Ave. in Red Bluff. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Gary Martin of the First Baptist Church in Winton, will be bringing the morning message. Martin, a long time friend of the family, was on the ordination council when Pastor John was ordained in May of 1982. Mercy High Food Drive Growing up As children we chanted to the rain- drops sliding down our front room window pane "Rain, Rain go away. Come again some other day". We wanted to be outside playing in the streets or running down the only cob- blestone street in Dunsmuir California. Winter Saturday mornings were cer- tainly not the time to be stuck indoors. There were diversions. Children’s host, Captain Kangaroo, The Rocky and Bullwinkle show, Ricochet Rab- bit, Mighty Mouse, and Tweety Bird came to our rescue. If we were lucky after cartoons there was a Tarzan or a Lone Ranger movie. In the evening we looked forward to The Rifleman or Have Gun will Travel programs. But our parents knew twelve hours of tele- vision was not good for promoting creativity in developing minds. They turned off the T.V. and encouraged reading, drawing or playing board games on those long winter evenings. When exactly did we stop playing Monopoly? What day was it that we decided we were too old to shoot mar- bles or make mud pies? When exact- ly did we put our doll in the closet or put the stick riding horse under the bed for the last time? I read somewhere that adulthood consists of an invisible line we cross unaware, until we look back years later. Courtesy photo Students at Mercy High School, as part of their Catholic Schools Week activities, this week supported the Food for the Heart campaign being conducted by the Red Bluff Downtown Business Association. All week long, Mercy students collected food and delivered it to owner Jessie Woods, far right, at the Red Bluff Gold Exchange. The food will be donated to the Tehama County Gleaners Foodbank. Life changes come in small deci- sions we make over a life time. We take this job or that and meet someone who changes our lives. We join a new social group and find their new way of looking at things changes our way of thinking. We buy a new home, move into a different apartment and our old habits fade away into new ones and old friends drift apart and new ones gradually grow on us. Then we wake up one day to dis- cover twenty years simply disappeared. Life dissipates in the fog of days, months and years. The Psalmist David wrote "Teach us to number our days, that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom" (Ps 90:12). James wrote that our lives are but a vapor that appears for a little while then disappears (James 4:14). These warnings were not written to make us depressed, but to remind us that our deci- sions today affect our lives tomorrow. ing God (Romans 14:1-5). The prob- lem was not whether they ate meat offered to idols, but that they judged one another for having a difference of opinion. Individuals were despising those who disagreed with them and were being judged in return. In other words their lives were being consumed by empty arguments. Shirley Fay Our tendency is to judge people whose choices are dif- ferent than ours. It is clear that we are to judge sin (Lk 6:43-45), but so often we judge people instead. In Paul’s time after men used their meat to worship idols they sold it in the marketplace. Some of the Chris- tians felt that meat offered to idols was defiled. Others reasoned that the offer- ing of meat to idols meant nothing, because idols were empty blocks of wood, silver or gold. Since they were not real, they could hold no power over the believer. Consequently, they enjoyed a nice piece of steak whenev- er they could afford it. The Bible makes it clear people from both sides of the issue were serv- GodTalk It is in this context Paul wrote, "Who are you to judge another man’s ser- vant, before his own mas- ter he will stand or fall. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand" (Romans 14:4). This is good news to everyone. First the weight of judging some- one else is off our shoul- ders. Secondly, we know God is able to make us stand holy before him in the Day of Judgment (Jude 1:24). Life is much too short to waste it arguing over non-essentials. Let us live thoughtful of our brothers’ and sisters’ convictions and not use our lib- erty to trouble another’s faith. (Romans 14:13, 19, 22; 15:2).
