Thursday, January 16, 2014 – Daily News 3A Community people&events Rotary donates toward tax program for seniors The joys of beginning Or perhaps I should say the joys of gardening? Can there be anything better than stopping at a great nursery and getting all sorts of plants that you don't have yet? I had had an interest in abutilons for quite a while and this year I was able to get three - one pink, one red and one with no flowers yet but with spectacular leaves, all speckled with gold. Years ago I met and visited a man in San Francisco named Victor Reiter. He lived near the entrance to Golden Gate Park on a large plot of land his family had received in the past as a Spanish land grant. He was retired and busily involved in hybridizing abutilons. I was fascinated with his creations - so many colors and some leaf specializations. I am so looking forward to choosing just the right spot for them. They should be happy once they get settled (and if it ever rains). I'm planning to talk to them every day. Actually I'm a strong believer in talking to your plants. If they don't seem to beds. The plants are evergreen and very hardy to make a good-looking planting. Right now is renewal time with everything starting up again. This afternoon I was checking out the sedums and was really impressed to see all the new growth coming out. They don's seem to care that there may be more frost to come. I am always awed by the spirit of plants which choose to revive. There is a kind of magic in being able to put a plant in the ground and them watch it put up tentative new shoots which later become full fledged blossoms. No matter how many years a person has been engaged with plants or garden crops it is always the same feeling of victory and fulfillment. be doing well you can feel their stems to see if they are turbid. Another genus I haven't been much involve with is Ligularia. They seem to like the climate here in Northern California with a little shade. Their leaves are a rich resource if you are a member of an arrangement group where at each meeting everyone does an arrangement, with a different theme each month. Helleborus is another group of plants which does well in our area. I was able to get my hands on a white hellebore (more of a cream color) with which I am terrifically pleased. These plants are winter bloomers at a time when there isn't much going on in the flower The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with the Cascade District Garden Club; California Garden Clubs, Inc; Pacific Region Garden Clubs; and National Garden Clubs Inc.
