Temporary, seasonal and permanent job opportunities with the Klamath National Forest, Shasta-Trinity National Forest and National Park Service include positions in fire, botany, archeology, business administration, wildlife, recreation (trail crew), timber and engineering (equipment operator). The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 mil- lion acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation's clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The agency has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 80 percent of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of which 100 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live. Public hearing on self-driving cars The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will hold a public hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday to provide an opportunity for public comment on proposed autonomous vehicles testing regulations at DMV's headquarters in Sacramento. The hearing will be webcast from the Assembly Room of the Department of Motor Vehicles Headquarters, at 2415 First Ave., Sacramento. The proposed regulations governing the testing of self-driving and autonomous vehicles on California's public roadways were published in the Office of Administrative Law's California Regulatory Notice Register on Nov. 29, 2013. The publishing marked the start of a 45-day public comment period, which ends Monday. Public comment and ideas on the development of these vehicle testing regulations can also be presented during the scheduled hearing. A full text of the draft testing regulations is available at http://oal.ca.gov/res/docs/ pdf/notice/48z-2013.pdf, starting on page 1867. After the public hearing, DMV will deliver final testing regulations to the Office of Administrative Law for approval. Those regulations are anticipated to become final in the spring of 2014 and will then go into effect 120 days after approval. For the past year, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has been developing testing regulations as mandated by Senate Bill 1298 — Vehicle Code Section 38750. The regulations include requirements for testing vehicles, insurance, reporting and registration. In addition to the justreleased testing regulations, the DMV is working on regulations that will cover the public operation of self-driving cars on California's roadways. Those regulations will be completed by Jan. 1, 2015. For more information on the Autonomous Vehicle Regulations, public comment and webcast, visit: dmv.ca.gov/vr/autonom ous/auto.htm. Rubes By Leigh Ruben Los Angeles library to offer high school diplomas By JULIE WATSON Associated Press The Los Angeles Public Library is evolving from a place where people can check out books and surf the Web to one where residents can also earn an accredited high school diploma. The library announced Thursday that it is teaming up with a private online learning company to debut the program for high school dropouts, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation. It's the latest step in the transformation of public libraries in the digital age as they move to establish themselves beyond just being a repository of books to a full educational institution, said the library's director, John Szabo. Since taking over the helm in 2012, Szabo has pledged to reconnect the library system to the community and has introduced a number of new initiatives to that end, including offering 850 online courses for continuing education and running a program that helps immigrants complete the requirements for U.S. citizenship. The library hopes to grant high school diplomas to 150 adults in the first year at a cost to the library of $150,000, Szabo said. Many public libraries offer programs to prepare students and in some cases administer the General Educational Development test, which for decades was the brand name for the high school equivalency exam.
