10A – Daily News – Friday, January 28, 2011 Kids' Krafts: Sssssstop letting cold air in at home (MCT) — Most of the time, you don't need some- one to tell you that there is a window or door in your house that doesn't quite fit its frame. You can feel the cold drafts seep- ing inside, espe- cially during cold winter days and nights. One of the problems those drafts create, aside from the bone-chilling, uncomfortable cold that sends you shivering to the thermostat for the furnace to turn up the heat, is that portal to the outside is a money and energy waster, too. One solution is to buy a foam sealant and latex caulking to place inside and around the large gaps in window openings. Installing weather stripping on the bottom of doors will also help keep the cold out- doors from blowing inside. But for most kids, the easiest and quickest fix to get rid of drafts is to place towels along the cracks of the doorways and window sills. For unused door- ways, you can fold a few paper towels and shove them all around the open- ings. Granted, these aren't permanent solutions. There are lots of more effi- cient ways to put a stop to the energy waste in a time when everyone is trying to conserve the Earth's natur- al resources. An even more creative way to stop drafts and keep the cold outside where it belongs is to make a cute critter draft catcher with a MCT photo KidKraft critter can contain a draft under your door.
