Wednesday, January 8, 2014 – Daily News 3A Community people&events Veterans luncheon set for Chico A luncheon is planned for Tuesday, Jan. 21 to commemorate the Khe Sanh veterans of the Vietnam War. It has been 46 years since the start of the 77-day siege and battle that occurred on and around the United States Marine Corps Combat Base which was located in what was then the country of South Vietnam. The luncheon will began at 10:30 a.m. at the Eagles Hall, 20th and Mulberry streets, Chico. Cost is $5. The luncheon has been an annual event for several years and all are welcome to attend and show their support not only for those who participated in the Battle at Khe Sanh but also in support for all of those who have served and are serving in the military. Volunteers sought Here are some of the ways people can make a difference daily: • The Guardian Angel Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps families in need through a referral process from different agencies in Tehama County. Volunteers are needed to help with the clean up and organization of donated items. Help is also needed to lift heavy objects and yard work. Information is available at 384-9857. • AARP/IRS, under their Tax-Aide Program is seeking local volunteers to assist Tehama and Glenn county residents with state and federal tax preparation. Bilingual volunteers are also needed. They accept and train volunteers between October and December. Volunteers are asked to give a minimum commitment of four hours per week between Feb. 1 and April 15. Expenses are reimbursed on a limited basis. Mileage is reimbursed. Information is available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday at 385-2200. • The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program at Passages Adult Resource Center has ongoing recruitment for volunteers to be advocates on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries. Volunteers help to explain Medicare benefits and serve as advocates to help Medicare patients access the health care benefits. Information and application packets are available at 8986716. • St. Elizabeth Community Hospital Auxiliary needs volunteers to assist in different areas of the hospital; front information desk, gift shop, and patient services. Information is available from 529-8002. • The Tehama County Team of the Long-Term Care Ombudsmen needs volunteers to become advocates for residents in skilled nursing and residential care facilities for the elderly. Training is provided. Information is available at 898-5923. • The Lords Table needs volunteers to help cook meals for the homeless and hungry from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at the Vineyard Church on Walnut Street. Arrests • Sunday Dawn Howard, 32, Redding was arrested at Bowman Road and Evergreen for felony possession of a controlled substance, transportation of a controlled substance and misdemeanor paraphernalia. Deputies con- ducted a traffic stop on Howard and found her to be on probation. A subsequent search was conducted and 0.10 grams of methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe were found on her. Bail was $33,000. • Alexia Marie Kohlberg, 19, Red Bluff was arrested for felony inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and misdemeanor child cruelty. Election called to vote on disincorporation Complying with a petition presented several weeks ago by voters of the municipality the city trustees of Tehama Monday night decided to call a special election Tuesday, February 19, on the proposed disincorporation of that city. The proposal requires a two-third majority and doubt is expressed it will carry. Those in favor of the move urge disincorporation would be a saving for taxpayers of Tehama. — Jan. 8, 1924 Beef Moussaka Beef Moussaka is from Volume II, 244 prize-winning National Beef CookOff Recipes. 2 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 large onion, finely chopped 3/4 cup red wine 1/4 cup tomato paste 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 medium eggplant, sliced thinly crosswise 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons flour 1/4 cup butter, melted 2 cups milk 2 eggs beaten 1 cup yogurt 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1. Brown ground beef and onion in large fryingpan. Pour off drippings. Add wine, tomato paste, parsley, salt, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. Cook over low heat, uncovered, 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Place eggplant in a 9 x 12- inch baking dish. Some 420 pounds of prime rib were served by Ron Anderson and John Owens, to go with the caesar salad, baked potato, green beans, roll and ice cream that Vic Woolery and crew prepared. Spread beef mixture over eggplant. Top with bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. 3. Blend flour into melted butter, stirring with a wire whisk. Gradually stir in milk and cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is smooth and thickened. Remove from heat and cool slightly; stir in eggs, yogurt and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Pour sauce over bread crumbcheese layer. 4. Bake in moderate oven (375'F) 45 minutes or until top is golden and knife comes out clean from custard. Remove from oven; cool 20 to 30 minutes before cutting in squares and serving. Note: Can be prepared the day before and reheated for serving. The flavor of this dish improves on standing one day. 6 servings. Burglary •A 52-year-old woman reported someone pulled the exterior pad lock from her trailer door and removed items from inside her residence on the 8000 block of State Route 99E The theft happened sometime Sunday. Miscellaneous jewelry valued at $800, leather clothing valued at $800, a black Samsung Galaxy 4 cell phone valued at $500 and prescription pills were taken. Theft • A pumping contractor reported that someone removed more than 300 gallons of diesel fuel from vehicles and equipment parked on an empty lot on Quail Ridge about one mile west of Dapple Gray. Trash • A Howell Avenue resident reported someone was taking trash bags out of their trash cans and spreading it out on the street. Contact was made with a 34-year-old man who said he was recycling. He was advised to get permission before taking recyclables. Vandalism • A window at Mineral Elementary School was damaged sometime over winter break. Damage was estimated at $300.
