6A – Daily News – Wednesday, January 26, 2011 BULL & GELDING SALE JUDGES Continued from page 4A have confidence in what they’re buying, he said. “The consumer knows if they buy the bull here it has a good stamp of quality,” Lima said. Lima also enjoys the chance to see many familiar faces, discuss new genetics and ideas in the beef indus- try and see for himself how different genetics being tried have turned out, he said. “(Improving genetics) is what we strive for,” Lima said. “We get paid by the pound so we need bulls that can pass on the ability to grow (at a rapid rate) and still have calving ease.” One of his bulls waiting to be sifted today is a Cali- fornia State Champion that went from 62 pounds at birth to 1,400 pounds as a yearling, Lima said. Features such as the weight, which is measured at the second stop of the day, play into the scores when the grading committee get the bulls, he said. “They break them into category by the daily weight per gain and take that in mind when they’re judging them to see if they’re struc- turally correct, have good volume, which is how wide they are, and how smooth they move,” Lima said. A bull must receive a grade within the range of 87 to 91 to be accepted into the sale, he said. RED BLUFF “They put the sifting, weight and grade all togeth- er in one package and that’s how they come up with the Jack Owens Ideal Bull,” Lima said. The Jack Owens Ideal Bull winner will receive a prize after the bull is chosen from a select group tonight, but it’s more than just the money, he said. “It’s a big deal,” Lima said. “It gives the ranch bragging rights.” Sifting continues at 7:30 a.m. today with all breeds of the halter bulls. ——— Julie Zeeb can be reached at 527-2153, extension 115 or jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.c om. 2011 Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale schedule Saturday, The Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale runs through Jan. 29 at the Tehama District Fair- ground.
