4A – Daily News – Wednesday, January 26, 2011 Red Bluff known for tough judges — sifting begins By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer The first set of bulls out of almost 400 that were expected to come to Red Bluff were sifted Tuesday at the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale, starting with the Calving Ease and Range Ready Bulls. Starting about 10:30 a.m., the bulls went through the sifting committee, which was made up of Gor- don Bruce, Nathan Owens and Kenny Hufford and local veterinarian Oscar Hooton. Hubert Osturn of C&H Ranching Inc. out of Roscoe, Mont. spent sever- al hours Tuesday manning the gate in the sifting ring. Those the judges marked with a green X were sifted, he said. From there the animal is weighed before visiting the grading judges, which include Mike Hall, Button Daugherty and Mark Bid- well. “Mostly (in sifting) they look at the way they travel and their feet,” Osturn said. “If they make the sifting they’ll typically make it (to the sale).” Sue Willhoit of Lazy J Red Angus out of Hills- boro, Ore. brought three halter ready bulls named Dudley, Dewey and Dwight and, while her bulls will not be sifted until today’s round, she is already a bit Daily News photo by Julie Zeeb Daily News photo by Julie Zeeb A judge takes a look at a range ready bull Tuesday in the sifting ring. Frank Lima of Stardust Farms out of Oak Run, who has been coming to the sale for 23 years, brought seven bulls. “I go to about six bull sales a year,” Lima said. “This is the best bull sale west of the Mississippi and it’s an honor to market bulls here. If you’re going to come you had better bring good bulls and they had better be healthy or they will spot them.” Lima said the Red Bluff sale is his favorite because the judges are tough and everything is consistent. “Whether it’s your first time or last time the proce- dure’s the same and that’s what makes Red Bluff, Red Bluff,” Lima said. “They don’t play favoritism and the new kid on the block has the same chance as someone who has come two years or 22 years.” The judges are thor- ough, so the consumer can See JUDGES, page 6A Participants in the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale Kick-Off Breakfast and Beef Forum fill their plates Tuesday in the Don Smith Pavilion. By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Several Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale attendees worked their way down to the Don Smith Pavilion Tues- day morning for a free breakfast and a Beef Forum. The forum speaker, Intervet Schering-Plough Animal Health Technical Services Manager Eric Moore, focused on Bovine Respiratory Disease, or BRD, Com- plex. “Disease is a result of complex interaction between the host, environment and agent and the environment plays a role,” Moore said. “We need to look at things like cattle handling and how that affects diseases.” Moore, who used to have a veterinary practice, said Active Senior Citizens TEHAMA ESTATES PROVIDES: ◆ Independent Living ◆ Private Apartments ◆ House Keeping Services ◆ Warm & Friendly Staff ◆ Three Nutritious Meals Daily ◆ 24 Hour Secure Environment ◆ Recreational Programs ◆ Scheduled Transportation ◆ Private & Formal Dining Rooms EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY Red Bluff • 527-9193 750 David Avenue, Join with us and the Downtown Red Bluff Business Association Nationwide Coverage High Speed Internet Service The newest in Smartphone & Wireless Devices Red Bluff 136 Belle Mill Rd. The real ques- tion that should be asked is why are the other cattle in the herd still healthy and what was done differently that kept them from getting sick? It’s important to treat the animal quickly, Moore said. “The number one reason treatments fail is because of late or improper diagnosis,” Moore said. “There are numerous other organ systems and disease complexes that produce look alike clinical signs, which is why it’s critical to get (the drug) there quick and to know how it works. You want something that’s fast acting.” Animals have to have the ability to respond and should be treated using quality products under the prop- er guidelines, he said. “It’s all about matching the drugs to the bugs,” Moore said. “It has to be the right bug, the right time and right place.” Whereas in the past it was OK to try multiple differ- ent drugs at once, these days the medicine is made with a specific problem in mind, he said. Annie VanPeer of Petaluma came down for the free breakfast, not knowing there was a talk with it, she said. “It’s very informative,” VanPeer said. Others, like Dusty DeBraga of Red Bluff, had heard the information shared before, but still found the talk informative. “It’s a good refresher course,” DeBraga said. “It also keeps you up on the new products. Diseases evolve and hopefully the products will evolve as fast.” 500 Riverside Way, Red Bluff EARLY BIRD MENU • Everyday from 3:30-5:30pm • Teriyaki Chicken • 8 oz Prime Rib • 8 oz New York Served with Baked Potato & Veggies Only PRESENTS Double Cheese Burger with French Fries ready in less than 15 minutes DAILY LUNCH SPECIAL • EVERY Wednesday & Saturday Karaoke ~ Starting @ 9pm! • DJ EVERY Friday ★ NEW $5 BAR APPETIZERS BAR EVENTS ★ WINTER FORMAL! • FEBRUARY 19TH • Wear your Prom Dress or Old Brides Maid Dress! • King & Queen Nominations! • Photo Both! ★ FEBRUARY 26 ~ LIVE MUSIC! • Brass Hysteria, Miss Fortune & The Regrets, Lower Level & Human Capital will be playing here live!! $999 $799 528-0370 BULL & GELDING SALE Cattle health on menu RED BLUFF
