6A – Daily News – Tuesday, January 25, 2011 BULL & GELDING SALE Art Show added to this year’s event By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer The Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale will be cele- brating the 70th year of the bull sale when it starts at 7:30 a.m. today with the Kick-Off Breakfast and Beef Forum. The Gelding sale turns 49 and the stock dog sale celebrates its 33rd anniversary. “The weather looks like it will be great this week so there should be large crowds and there’s plenty for peo- ple to do even if they’re not interested in the bulls, hors- es and dogs,” said Sale Manager Adam Owens. The numbers are about the same for bulls and stock dogs with 384 bulls and 20 dogs in the catalogs, how- ever, geldings are down with only 113 this year. “It’s mostly economic related reasons,” Owens said. “The cattle market is very good right now and the hors- es are not. We expect there will be a strong demand for the bulls and at the female replacement sale Thursday.” The traditional trade show opens at noon Wednes- day along with the newest addition to the Bull Sale — an Art Show. The Red Bluff Bull Sale Western Art Show and Silent Auction, sponsored by Western Horseman Mag- azine, was added as a way to get the general public more involved in the event, Owens said. A variety of classes will be held in the open division including paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, silverwork and functional art such as saddles, leather- work and rawhide. In the youth division, for those 18 and under, there are two classes, which include artwork and photogra- phy. There will be a $1,000 first place prize for each open division and a $250 prize in the youth category. Best of Show will win $1,000 and first through third prizes will be awarded a ribbon in all divisions. While this will be the first event of its kind at the sale, the committee is hopeful it will draw artists from outside the area and art lovers too, he said. “The goal for the art show is to make it one of the premier western art shows in the country, drawing the best in their craft in all the classes offered,” Owens said. “The Bull Sale is a non-profit using the proceeds from our events to support the livestock industry and ag related causes. The art show has the potential to allow us to do more.” The kick-off breakfast, which begins at 7:30 a.m. will include a presentation on ‘Antibiotics and BRD, How treatments work and why they fail’ presented by Intervet Schering-Plough in the Don Smith Pavilion. Sifting and grading starts at 10:30 a.m. today in the Don Smith Pavilion and working stock dog competi- tion will begin at 1 p.m. today near the trinity parking lot. The stock dog sale begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday. The Internet Feeder and Replacement Female Sale, held with Western Video Market, will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Don Smith Pavilion. Competition gets under way for the geldings and mules at 7 a.m. Thursday in the Pauline Davis Pavilion with the Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse selection at 8 a.m. Friday. The sale of quarter horses, paint geldings and saddle mules, presented by Rolling Hills Casino, starts at 5 p.m. Friday. A Ted Robinson Cowhorse Clinic will be presented at 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday and 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday by Purina Mills in the Pauline Davis Pavilion. Cowboy Pancake Breakfast will be at 6 a.m. Friday in the Pauline Davis Pavilion and the CattleWomen will have their traditional Bull Sale Luncheon, which starts at 11 a.m. in the Fairground cafeteria. The Bull Sale starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Don Smith Pavilion and the evening closes with Red Bluff’s Buckin’ Best Bull Riding presented by Cinch Jeans at 7 p.m. with a dance to follow.
