Tuesday, January 25, 2011 – Daily News – 5B WORLD BRIEFING Suicide bomber blows himself up in Moscow MOSCOW (AP) — Terrorists struck again in the heart of Russia, with a suicide bomber blowing himself up Monday in Moscow’s busiest airport and turning its inter- national arrivals terminal into a smoky, blood-spattered hall of dis- membered bodies, screaming sur- vivors and abandoned suitcases. At least 35 people were killed, includ- ing two British travelers. No one claimed responsibility for the blast at Domodedovo Air- port that also wounded 180 people, although Islamic militants in the southern Russian region of Chech- nya have been blamed for previous attacks in Moscow, including a double suicide bombing on the capital’s subway system in March 2010 that resulted in 40 deaths. President Dmitry Medvedev called it a terrorist attack and immediately tightened security at Moscow’s two other commercial airports and other key transporta- tion facilities. It was the second time in seven years that Domodedovo was involved in a terrorist attack: In 2004, two female suicide bombers penetrated the lax security there, illegally bought tickets from air- port personnel and boarded planes that exploded in flight and killed 90 people. Medvedev canceled plans to travel Tuesday to the World Eco- nomic Forum in Davos, Switzer- land, where he aimed to promote Russia as a profitable investment haven to world business leaders. Suspect in Ariz. shooting pleads not guilty PHOENIX (AP) — The man accused of carrying out a mass shooting in Tucson pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he tried to kill Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and two of her aides. The plea by Jared Lee Loughn- er marked his second court appear- ance since he allegedly shot the congresswoman and 18 others at Giffords’ meet-and-greet event on Jan. 8 outside a grocery store in Tucson. Six people died, including U.S. District Judge John Roll and a 9-year-old girl. Thirteen others were wounded. Loughner, 22, faces federal charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and attempting to murder two of her aides. He will later face state charges dealing with other victims. At least eight U.S. Marshals were present at the hearing in the Phoenix courthouse, where Loughner entered Monday after- noon smiling and wearing an orange prison suit and glasses. His hair, shaved in the mug shot that’s become an enduring image of the tragedy, has grown out slightly. Investigators have said Loughn- er was mentally disturbed and act- ing increasingly erratic in the weeks leading up to the shooting. If his attorney uses mental compe- tency questions as a defense and is successful, Loughner could be sent to a mental health facility instead of being sentenced to prison or death. Ill. appellate court throws Emanuel off ballot in Chicago CHICAGO (AP) — An Illi- nois appeals court threw former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel off the ballot for Chicago mayor Tuesday because he didn’t live in the city in the year before the election. The decision cast doubt over Emanuel’s candidacy just a month before the election. He had been considered the front- runner and had raised more money than any other candi- date. The court voted 2-1 to over- turn a lower-court ruling that would have kept his name on the Feb. 22 ballot. Emanuel plans to appeal the matter to the Illinois Supreme Court. Early voting was set to begin on Jan. 31. ‘‘I have no doubt that we will Green’s family would attend the speech. The 20-year-old Universi- ty of Arizona student rushed to Giffords’ side and put pressure on her wounds until medical personnel arrived. Suspect ordered held without bail in NYC baby snatching NEW YORK (AP) — A North Carolina woman accused of snatching an infant from a New York hos- pital more than two decades ago after failing in her own attempts to have children was ordered held without bail on kidnapping charges Monday in federal court in Manhat- tan. in the end prevail at this effort. This is just one turn in the road,’’ Emanuel said, adding that the ‘‘people of the city of Chicago deserve the right to make the decision on who they want to be their next mayor.’’ Giffords intern hailed as hero to attend Obama’s State of the Union WASHINGTON (AP) — An intern to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who aided the con- gresswoman after she was shot in the head and the fam- ily of a 9-year-old girl who was killed will sit with first lady Michelle Obama for President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night. Giffords’ husband, Hous- ton-based astronaut Mark Kelly, does not plan to attend. Kelly was invited, but her office said he wants to stay close to his wife. Gif- fords was transferred last Fri- day from the Tucson hospital where she had been a patient since the Jan. 8 shooting to a Houston facility for rehabili- tation. Intern Daniel Hernandez was hailed as a hero after the rampage in Tucson in which 18 others were shot at a con- stituent event the Democratic congresswoman was holding. Six people were killed, including a federal judge and 9-year-old girl Christina Tay- lor Green. White House press secre- tary Robert Gibbs said Mon- day that Hernandez and Ann Pettway, 49, folded her hands, stared straight ahead and was silent during the five-minute court appear- ance. She surrendered Sun- day, days after a widely pub- licized reunion between the child she raised — now 23- year-old Carlina White — and her biological mother. Pettway’s lawyer, Robert Baum, said beforehand: ‘‘She feels badly. She’s very upset. She’s expressed concern about her family. But she understands the gravity of the charges.’’ Pettway, of Raleigh, N.C., earlier confessed to taking the baby in early August 1987 from Harlem Hospital during an interview after she surrendered to the FBI and Bridgeport, Conn., police, FBI agent Maria Johnson said in a criminal complaint. U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein ordered Pettway detained Monday after Baum said no bail appli- cation would immediately be made. Because there is no indictment, no plea was nec- essary. She could face a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison or as much as life if she is convicted.
