A dramatic image of rice harvest on a Sacramento Valley farm earned the Grand Prize in the 2013 California Farm Bureau Federation photo contest. Shot by sixth-generation Butte County rice farmer Tracy Schohr, the photo shows three rice harvesters moving toward the camera, silhouetted against an orange sunset. Schohr said she intended her photo to show "man and big machines working in harmony" as well as "a family hard at work, overcoming the challenges of farming." The image earned top honors among nearly 200 submitted to the annual contest from Farm Bureau members throughout California. Photographers also earned firstand second-place awards in five categories. Napa County Farm Bureau member Harry Matthiasson was a double winner in the contest, earning first place in the Kids and Critters on the Farm category, for a photo of a boy petting a pig at a farm near Matthiasson's Healdsburg home. The 16-year-old Matthiasson also took second place in the Fresh and Local category, for a photo of tomatoes on the vine. Yolo County Farm Bureau member Lori Baylor captured first place in the Fresh and Local category, for a colorful image of produce displayed on the back of a wagon at a Capay Valley farm. Second place in the Kids and Critters on the Farm category went to Glenn County Farm Bureau member Marianne Couto, who photographed her 2-year-old son Lane walking through a wheat field. In the All in a Day's Work on the Farm category, first place went to Shasta County Farm Bureau member Crystal Amen, for a photo of a cowboy moving cattle at the Shasta Livestock Auction Yard. Butte County Farm Bureau member Angelina Cinquini earned second place for a close-up photo of her grandmother's hands as she sorted almonds. Placer County Farm Bureau member Janet Johnson won first place in the Rural Scenic category, for an image of wild horses racing across a desert landscape. Santa Clara County Farm Bureau member Arleah Fields took second place for a photo of golden California pop- pies on the family's ranch. In the Budding Artists category—for photographers aged 13 and younger—Plumas-Sierra County Farm Bureau member Kristin Roberti, 10, won first place for an image of her pet rooster preparing to fly off of a fencepost. Twelveyear-old Stanislaus County Farm Bureau member Mary Grace Nascimento earned second place for a close-up image of almonds in her family's orchard. This is the 32nd year the California Farm Bureau has conducted its photo contest. The Grand Prize winner earned a $500 prize. Firstplace winners in the individual categories each earned $250, with second-place winners each earning $100. Winning images are also published in the CFBF publications Ag Alert and California Bountiful, on the publications' websites and on the CFBF site at www.cfbf.com. The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of nearly 78,000 members statewide and as part of a nationwide network of more than 6.2 million Farm Bureau members. James Avery of 'Fresh Prince' fame dead at 68 NEW YORK (AP) — James Avery, the bulky character actor who laid down the law at home and on the job as the Honorable Philip Banks in ''The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,'' has died. Avery's publicist, Cynthia Snyder, told The Associated Press that Avery died Tuesday in Glendale, Calif., following complications from open heart surgery. He was 68, Snyder said. Avery, who stood more than 6 feet tall, played the family patriarch and a wealthy attorney and judge on the popular TV comedy that launched the acting career of Will Smith as Banks' troublemaking nephew. The sitcom, which aired on NBC from 1990 to 1996, was set in the Banks' mansion, to which Smith's character was sent from Philadelphia when things got tough in his own neighborhood. Fans came to know the imposing Banks as ''Uncle Phil.'' Avery liked to say that the way to be an actor was to act, and he had a busy and diverse career before, during and after ''Fresh Prince.'' His TV credits included ''Grey's Anatomy,'' ''NYPD Blue'' and ''Dallas,'' and among his many films were ''Fletch,'' ''Nightflyers'' and ''8 Million Ways to Die.'' His voice alone brought him many jobs, notably as Shredder in the animated TV series ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.'' Business Managers: Wildlife art show and sale Wildlife Wonders III will feature the works of Jeffrey Roderick Jan. 3-25 at the Orland Art Gallery. Self taught, nationally recognized wildlife artist Roderick, brings his waterfowl wonders to the Orland Art Center for the first show of 2014. Partnering once again with the Snow Goose Festival, the Orland Art Gallery will be one of the many fascinating wildlife field trips offered by the Festival during the last weekend of the Gallery show, Jan. 25. Roderick's love affair with wildlife began early in his childhood and from the first wildlife art that he produced at the age of nine, to his present day artistic accomplishments, the fascination for it never left him. Born and raised in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California, Roderick found the rich diversity of wildlife in the area to be all that he needed for artistic inspiration. His work is collected in several countries around the world and he has twice been the California Waterfowl Artist of the year. His work is amazing and so is this exhibit. Meet the artist at his reception 3-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3. There are always excellent treats at the refreshment table and live music performed on our baby grand piano by this month's talented young pianist, Martin Trang. Remember, our Orland Art Center Show and Sale always features art with a wide price range. Original art, quality prints, and delightful Fine Art cards are available in a variety of sizes and mediums. Gallery hours are 1-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at 732 Fourth St. in Orland. 'Duck' son Robertson makes nice in Fox interview NEW YORK (AP) — ''Duck Dynasty'' star Willie Robertson chose not to quack back. In one of his first chances to comment on the dustup surrounding his outspoken father and co-star Phil Robertson, the younger Robertson had only kind words for the A&E network and New Year's wishes for the nation in an appearance Tuesday night on Fox News's ''All-American New Year'' special. ''We're just glad to be back to work, and A&E and us are fine,'' Willie Robertson said in a live appearance with wife Korie from Steamboat Springs, Colo. Fox hosts Bill Hemmer and Elizabeth Hasselbeck gave him several chances to address the firestorm surrounding the suspension of his father over anti-gay comments, but without quite ducking the question, Willie Robertson chose not to take the bait either. ''We're looking forward to getting back to making some funny shows. It's a New Year so we're ready to break in a New Year and start it all over again,'' Robertson said. ''We're ready to move on, you know. I think we all learned a lot and we're just ready to move on, and the family's happy, and we're ready to go. I've got to make sure my guys are back there building duck calls.'' Asked her thoughts on the suspension by Hasselbeck, Korie Robertson took the same conciliatory tone. ''Hey, I'm just glad the family's all together, the best thing about the show is we get to do it as a family,'' she said. ''We're all happy, happy, happy.'' The cable channel reinstated Phil Robertson on Friday, nine days after suspending him over the anti-gay comments made to GQ magazine. The suspension sparked brought out legions of defenders who felt he was being censored by the network.
