Thursday, January 2, 2014 – Daily News 3A Community people&events Granges supports Volcanoes in the garden – Oh no! canine program making miles of inter-connecting tunnels 6 to 10 inches below the surface — with frequent volcanoshaped mounds of excavated soil— molehills. These tunnels are for trapping and storing their food. The most effective way to rid your garden of moles is trapping. Poison baits and toxic gas (bombs) are mostly ineffective and dangerous to pets, birds, and beneficial insects. The next time a volcano erupts in your garden, run down to the nearest hardware store for traps. Red Bluff Garden Club meets the last Tuesday of most months. The next meeting is January 28 at the Union Hall at 12889 Baker Road. Program starts at 1 p.m. Our January program is on pruning with Rick Buckner. Visitors are welcome. The better our soil the more moles it may attract. Lack of rain this season should keep the moles deeper in the soil, but as soon as it rains or we start to irrigate they will come closer to the surface and kill plants as well as cause unsightly damage. Contrary to popular belief moles do not eat plants, but inadvertently kill them by damaging the roots with their tunneling and upheaving them from the soil. And of course, their "volcanoes" disfigure our lawns and can make walking on them rough. Local moles are Talpidae scapanus. These moles can be quite large, with eight inches or larger tubular bodies. These mammals have dense-velvety fur which was at one time prized for fur coats and other warm water-proof garments. Moles have a bare snout and bare feet. They have huge front feet with long toes—good for excavating your garden. Moles have a high metabolism and can eat up to three times their body weight daily in underground prey of insects, grubs, and worms. Moles have almost nonexistent eyes, and seldom come above ground. Moles are solitary creatures and come together only for breeding. For you trivia buffs, a male mole is called a boar and female is a sow. A group of moles are called a "labour." Females breed once a year. Breeding takes place late winter into spring with pups being born in litters of 2 to 5 in 30 to 42 days depending on the species. Pups leave the nest in 30-45 days to search out their own territories. Moles have a relatively short life span of 3-4 years. Moles are master excavators The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with National Garden Clubs, Inc., California Garden Clubs, Inc., the Pacific Region of Garden Clubs, and the Cascade District of Garden Clubs.
