4A – Daily News – Saturday, January 22, 2011 Agriculture & farm Local bull makes good I don’t remember Hattie Lingscheid, the tiny, little lady who supervised the Herbert Kraft playground, since my sister and I never played on the swings and slides when we came to town with our parents. Many people mentioned her and her first aid kit at the playground. Photo by Shelia Stannard, American Angus Association. Thanks to Tehama County Library her obituary Feb. 7, 1976 in Daily News: “Miss Harriet ‘Hattie’ Lingscheid, who would have been 102 years old on March 9, died yesterday evening in St. Elizabeth Hospital. “Her life encompassed a period that began before the automobile was invented in the United States (Duryea Brothers 1892) and one that closed after seeing men walk on the moon. “Hattie, as all called her, was born March 9, 1874 in Independence, Iowa when Ulysses S. Grant was presi- dent. She was six weeks old when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lingscheid and an older brother Fred, came to Red Bluff. Five brothers and sisters were born here. Her father had a shop for many years at the corner of Main and Pine Streets, where the newsstand is now, and where he made leather boots and shoes. The fami- ly home behind the store on Pine Street, was torn down last year. Hattie lived there for 93 years until mov- ing several years ago to a more convenient home and then to a rest home. “Hattie attend- ed Mercy Acade- my and still had the medal pre- sented to her at graduation in 1894. Later she gave it to Mercy High School. That first acade- my, near Rio and Pine Streets, burned and all records were lost. As was the custom then, she boarded with families dur- ing the week and came home weekends ‘riding the caboose’ as she used to say. Other schools in which she taught were Jellys Ferry, Paynes Creek, Blossom and Colyear. “However, it was as the Kraft Playground supervi- sor that she was best known and loved by three genera- tions of families. After her mother’s death, she left teaching to help her father. She was asked to help at the playground for a month until a new supervisor could be found when the first one left, but that request turned into a 26 year stint. “The diminutive Hattie had been a sparkling and perky guest of honor on the occasion of an open house cele- brating her 100th birthday in 1974. “She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, where she joined the Ladies Aid Soci- ety in the 1890s. Her mother had been a charter member. She had also been an active member of the Senior Citi- zens. “Although her hearing and eyesight had begun to fail in recent years, they were still acute enough to permit her to enjoy a rous- ing game of whist and to knit lap robes for veterans hospitals until she went to the rest home. “She is survived by a sis- ter-in-law Mrs Helen Stolp of Red Bluff; two nephews, Robert Lingscheid of Canoga Park and Erwin Lingscheid of Hazlet, N.J. and a niece, Mrs Mildred Martin of Pleasant Hill. “A Rosary will be recited at 8 o‚clock tomorrow evening in the Chapel of Flowers and a requiem mass will be celebrated Sat- Red Bluff Garden Center 766 Antelope Blvd. (next to the fairgrounds) 527-0886 Fruit Tree LIC #808524 Call For Free Information Toll-Free (800) 464-1403 or (530) 365-1403 6183 MEISTER WAY ANDERSON, CA 96007 (530) 365-1403 (800) 464-1403 Pruning & Care Class Jan. 23 @ 1pm Please call to reserve a seat Thank You urday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Expert urges agriculture water use changes SACRAMENTO (AP) — An expert says small changes in agricultural irrigation practices could eliminate wasteful water use. Delta Watermaster Craig Wilson says in a report being presented to the State Water Resources Con- trol Board next week that California should crack down and aggressively enforce the state’s ban on wasteful water use. The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday that Wilson proposes broader enforcement of the state Constitution’s ‘‘reasonable use’’ doctrine rather than current case-by-case enforcement. Wilson says serious water savings would be realized if agriculture used water more efficiently. He urges the state board to convene a summit, cre- ate an enforcement unit and streamline enforce- ment procedures.
