Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Comments, comment, comments Comments were cool and not so cool. It is noted that several people were stunned at the picture of me with "Bella." Other readers tolerat- ed the change, there were those who did not particularly care for the pic- ture and stated that it did not look like me. There were those who declared that I still look like the pic- ture that has run in the paper all these years. Another reminder to me was that I actually contributed to the paper before 1992. They were right. I did begin my column earlier at the request of Editor Bill Goodyear, while I was living in Mineral before 1992; the picture was taken before 1992. Why all this talk about my pic- ture? I don’t really know but it is quite a treat for several people to tell me that I still look the same as I did, twenty plus years ago. Now that I think of it, I either looked younger or older in the 1990s. I do need to remind the populace of Tehama County that my Great Grandmother, Lucy Jane Hacker lived to be 103, so who knows how I might look in future years. Enough chit chat, onward and upward to subjects of a different nature. I have noted a number of letters to the D.N. commenting on Evan Hinton’s recent letter. The com- ments have been both supportive and not so supportive. Remember, when we learn about a particular subject we do not necessarily embrace it or substitute it for our Christian faith. Human beings have numerous opportunities to learn about the theories held by others. We do not necessarily change our lives because we have become knowledgeable; in fact we often become more solid in our Christian belief in God. A few dozen years ago in 1895, Clara H. Scott composed a hymn titled; "Open My Eyes That I May See." Clara Scott was inspired to both the words and the music; she was drawn toward music at an early age, having the privilege of attending the first musical institute of Chicago, conducted by the famous music publisher, C.M. Cady. The first verses of her song come to my mind often as I search or attempt to analyze something I am reading. "Open my eyes that I may see…Glimps-es of truth Thou hast for me; Open my ears that I may hear…Voices of truth Thou send-est clear." Clara’s song was based on words from the Bible, a biblical prayer Psalm 119:18: "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law." I have found that this hymn is a tremendously helpful companion to remind me to digest carefully what I may read with open eyes and ears. Yes, I again had the opportunity Carolyn Barber of baby-sitting Bella my picture companion. We took a walk in the wind. Bella is not very big but she fought the battle of walking against it anyway. She was total- ly enamored with our neighborhood and attempted to take side trips many, many times. Needless to say she was very tired by the time we got home, Bella headed for her comfy, floor cush- ion and I headed for the sofa. Yeh, I think we are becoming pretty good companions. Her owners like her a lot so I think we will only have this little Yorkie-Peak on a once in a while basis. In the area of opening our eyes and minds, I noted that the Tehama County homeless census is set for Monday, Jan. 24. Those who can help are encouraged to call Gail Locke at 527-5290 or send an email to glocke@snowcrest.net. This census in counting the homeless population will assist in helping those in need. Have a great upcoming week. Happy Birthday Dejon Barber Wel- don. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
