The proposal, which would mix the Eastern Ath- letic and Northern Athletic Leagues and shuffle Corning to the Butte Valley League was posted on the Northern Section’s website Thursday. In all sports except football, Red Bluff would be part of the NAL along with Anderson, Central Val- ley, Enterprise, Foothill, Shasta, West Valley and Yreka. The four big schools (Red Bluff, Shasta, Foothill and Enterprise) would play each other twice and meet the four small schools once for a total of 10 league games. Corning would join Gridley, Orland, Sutter, Wheatland and Winters in the Butte Valley. The new EAL would consist of Chico, Lassen, Las Plumas, Oroville, Paradise and Pleasant Valley. In football only, a Big North league would be created resembling the version of the EAL used from 2008-2010. Red Bluff would be grouped with Chico, Enter- prise, Foothill, Paradise, Pleasant Valley and Shas- ta. Lassen would rejoin the five current NAL schools to form a new Mid Valley League. Las Plumas and Oroville would join with Grid- MediaNews Group photo by Jeff Larson Spartans guard Carlos Tapia drives on Ben Piper of Paradise during the second half Wednesday. BOYS HOOPS Red Bluff 28 Paradise 50 JEFF LARSON MediaNews Group PARADISE — Paradise’s 1x2x2 zone press harassed Red Bluff all night Wednesday, but most notably in the third quarter, where the team forced seven turnovers, held Red Bluff to two points and helped lead to a 50-28 vic- tory over the Spartans in a EAL— South showdown on the Ridge. The Bobcats, who led by only six twice in the first half, quickly bloomed its advantage to double-digits in the third quarter, when senior guard Dominic Parisi corralled a steal and found fellow senior Zack Saylors for two of his team-high 12 points, to push the lead to 30-19 and force Red Bluff (4-11) to call timeout. The Spartans, playing without Eric Vidal and Jonah McInnis, found little success out of the stoppage. The team committed four of its 16 turnovers courtesy of Paradise’s zone press at the midway point of the third quarter. As a result, the offense scored zero field goals and nothing till 19 seconds left in the period, after averaging 37 points per game the last six contests. Jadon Breevaart, the Bobcats’ main defensive enforcer Wednesday night, recorded a team-high three steals and 10 rebounds. In the first half, the Bobcats had no answer for Ian Hill, Red Bluff’s senior 6-foot, guard who dropped in 12 points on 2-for-2 shooting from 3- point range. He finished with 15 points with a three late in the game. However, the team was a paltry 4 for 16 from perimeter, with Taylor Blaser as the only player other than Hill to drill a 3- point shot. “I feel for coach (Stan) Twitchell, they were short-handed (without) (Vidal) and McInnis,” Wrobel said. “They are working hard and are get- ting better, (but) tonight we had the better team.” Paradise finished with a pair in dou- ble figures with Parisi following Say- lors with 11 points. Red Bluff returns home tonight to face Lassen at 7:30 p.m. Jeff Larson is the sports editor at the Paradise Post. Top Fuelers top tournament ley, Orland, Sutter, Wheatland and Winters to form the Big South. The Tehama County Shootout game is noted on all of the proposed football schedules. A previous proposal on the section’s website had Red Bluff and Corning in the same league. The Northern Section is on a 2-year cycle for league alignments. The current structure went into place this school year and will run through June 2012. Most of the league restructuring involving Los Molinos and Mercy High Schools has already been finalized. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year Los Molinos will join Mercy in the Tri-Cities League in volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. They will be joined by Chester, Hayfork, Liber- ty Christian, Redding Christian and University Prep. In football, Los Molinos will be in the Mountain Valley with Biggs, Chester, Maxwell, Portola and University Prep. Mercy will stay in the California Conference’s 8- man football league. Giants, Lopez reach deal San Francisco Giants SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Lefty reliever Javier Lopez and the World Series champion San Francis- co Giants have agreed to terms on a one-year con- tract for $2,375,000. The 33-year-old Lopez had been eligible for salary arbitration. He had asked for $2,875,000 and the Giants had offered $2 million. Lopez can earn an additional $50,000 each for pitching 55 or 60 innings in the deal he received Thursday. He went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 27 out- ings for the Giants, who acquired him at the trad- ing deadline from Pittsburgh. Lopez made nine appearances in the postseason, two during the Giants’ five-game World Series vic- tory over the Texas Rangers. The franchise won its first title since 1954.
