The deal marks a nice raise for the former kid rodeo clown. Ross earned $4.45 million last season, when he joined the Giants on a waiver claim from Florida on Aug. 22. Ross became one of the Giants’ most reliable players down the stretch and during an improbable title run. The franchise won its first championship since 1954 and first since moving West in 1958. The 30-year-old Ross quickly became a fan favorite in the Bay Area. He hit three of his five postseason home runs dur- ing the NL championship series against Philadelphia. The NL West champion Giants — in the playoffs for the first time since 2003 — won in six games against the favored Phillies and Ross received MVP honors. He drove in 10 runs during the playoffs, two in San Francisco’s five-game World Series win over the Texas Rangers. Son of a team roper and steer wrestler, Ross as a boy would dress up as a clown for weekend rodeo events with hopes of one day getting in the ring. But he discovered base- ball first. Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez reached agreement on a $4.8 million, one-year deal. The left-hander pitched a no-hitter on July 10, 2009, then went 13-9 with a 3.07 ERA in 33 starts and 34 outings overall last season. Right-handed reliever Ramon Ramirez, another midsea- son addition last year, also avoided arbitration by agreeing on a $1.65 million, one-year deal. Ramirez went 1-0 with a 0.67 ERA in 25 outings for the Giants. He was acquired from Boston in a trade deadline deal. GIRLS HOOPS Paradise 48 Red Bluff 31 By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor A strong second half surge wasn’t enough to overcome cold shooting in the first half, Tuesday night, as the Lady Spartans fell 48-31 to EAL — South rival Paradise. Red Bluff trailed 35-8 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter before the Lady Spartans’ reserves sparked a rally. One-by-one Red Bluff’s starters re- entered the game as the momentum kept building during a 21-2 run in the Spartans’ favor. Roxy Luppino knocked down con- secutive 3-pointers to cut the lead to double-digits and then Cori Schatz hit a turn around jumper in the paint to make the game 37-29 with four min- utes to play. It was as close as the Spartans would get, as Hannah Roberts tripled for the Lady Bobcats then Kailey Williams converted a bucket following a Red Bluff backcourt turnover. With that the momentum and the rally died. Red Bluff found itself in such a deep hole to dig out after they struggled to make baskets for the first 22 minutes of the game. Adding to the woes was that Paradise also held a 2-to-1 rebounding advantage in the first half. Despite their poor shooting, the Lady Spartans worked hard on defense and even won the turnover battle 26- 21. Darian Horner paced Paradise with 11 points, all coming in the first half. Stephanie Vestnys controlled the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with nine points. Luppino led Red Bluff with eight points, all coming in the final frame. Alana Hinkston had six points and Lottie Jones and Cori Schatz each had four. Red Bluff fell to 4-11 on the season, having lost eight of their past nine games.
