INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by JANICE BURTON According to the Fayetteville Observer, Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne is considering seeking a fourth term in offi ce. In an interview with Observer reporter Andrew Barksdale, Chavonne said the act of deciding whether he would seek offi ce again was a “deliberative” process. For those who know Chavonne, that isn’t a big surprise. Over his tenure as the city’s leader, Chavonne has always made a careful study over decisions he has made. Or to use his term, he has made his decisions after carefully considering the wisdom and expediency of a proposal. That’s what I like about Tony Chavonne. He thinks before he speaks. He listens before he makes up his mind and he goes into meetings informed. He, along with Ted Mohn, are probably two of the most well-informed leaders in our community. They both make a careful study of what’s being discussed and they do their leg work before they come into the council chambers. Over the years as a newspaper reporter, I have seen my share of the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to politicos. I’ve seen leaders like Chavonne and Mohn, and I’ve seen their counterparts. They are the guys who seek offi ce more for the idea of it than for the service of it. They come into council meetings ill-prepared to discuss the business on the table, and often do not even appear interested in what’s going on in the room. it to a city staffer who doesn’t know the answer, because Mayor Maness will let them know that he does know it. Some might say he takes his part-time job as the mayor too seriously. But isn’t that the kind of leadership and deliberation we need from our leaders? I would rather have a leader who knows the exact number of ink pens ordered by the city than one who doesn’t know anything at all. I would rather have a leader who immerses himself in his position, than one who waltzes into meetings for soundbites and headlines. Nowhere is that need greater than in our Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne U.S. Congress. Ever sat in those hallowed halls and watch our Congress in action? It’s like watching paint peel. Most of the time, unless there’s a vote scheduled, there’s a handful of ongressmen on the fl oor, and a gazillion of their staffers. When it’s time for a vote, they all fl ood the fl oor, but in the interim, they haven’t listened to what anyone has said or haven’t offered an argument for or against the proposed legislation — unless it’s in front of a microphone and camera. For many, their opinions are formed by the legwork of their staffers and by the deep pockets of the lobbyists who are more at home on Capitol I have had to bite my tongue in many council meetings over the years. Sitting in my seat, I’ve wanted to jump to my feet, and yell, “Hey, you got the agenda packet a week ago — couldn’t you have at least read it?” Because even the simple act of reading the packet is the least we can expect from our leaders. We should be able to expect so much more. There’s some rumble about Chavonne becoming a “mayor for life.” I know one of those. North of here, in my hometown of Troy, Mayor Roy Maness has been the mayor as long as I can recall. Maness, like Chavonne, is a deliberative leader. He doesn’t ask a question unless he already knows the answer, and woe be Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast January 21 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Thursday January 20 Saturday January 22 Hill than most of Congress. How else would bills that were never read be passed into law? Being a politician is easy. You just have to smile, shake some hands, kiss some babies, make big promises and take big money from those who are only too willing to invest in your campaign. Being a statesman is a different matter. That involves the kind of deliberative decision making that real leaders like Tony Chavonne and small town mayors like Roy Maness do every day. I don’t know what Chavonne’s decision will be, but I do know one thing — it will be well JANICE BURTON, Associate Publisher, thought out. Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? editor@upandcomingweekly.com.
