There have been thousands of im- provements for cars and motorcycles in the past hundred years but for me, nothing has been as innovating as the GPS. Many of my motorcycle buddies laugh at me for hav- ing a GPS on my bike. That is until they are behind me on the road! The GPS will change the way you ride, navigate and explore this great country. Garmin has released the zumo® 665. I have used a Garmin zumo® 550 for about three years. Both the 550 and the 665 come with a motorcycle and a car mount. This allows you a lot of flexibility. They also run off an internal battery so you just need to put it in your pocket. So how does a GPS change your riding experience? The zumo line is motorcycle friendly. They are easy to read and manipulate on the fly. They also come with a handy fuel gauge. You enter your average mpg and tank size and the GPS calculates your distance. It warns you when you are low on fuel with a pop up warning. Push the warning and it will show you the nearest gas station. The device lets you see what lies ahead. I zoom in the screen to a point where I can see which way the road is going to cut in front of me. This is extremely helpful during the poor visibility of night, rain or fog. Both of these devices come with built in MP3 players. I love music. I have about 3,000 songs on a 4GB SD card. I also have about four audio- books, which is great if I want to learn a little something while riding. It also has XM radio built into it for uninterrupted audio. With the addition of XM NavWeather, you can access up-to-the-minute weather data and NExRAD radar graphics from your map screen. The advantage of the audio is that the device will tell you where your turns are so you don’t have to have your face planted into a map. These zumos come with Bluetooth and audio outputs if you want to use headphones or wire into your bike’s stereo. The Bluetooth allows you to patch you phone calls through the device so you can easily place calls via the GPS. They also have a picture viewer if you want to bring pictures along for the ride. The difference between the 550 and 665 is the 665 comes with a built-in XM antenna which was an additional cost on the 550. The 665 also has stereo Bluetooth. As I continue to learn about my GPS one of the best things I’ve found is that you can take off down a road and just go chase the adventure. You can ride for hours then push a button and find your way back. Another trick I use is; when I’m traveling and getting tired I pull over and search for hotels along my route. If you drill into the address of a place it will also give you the phone number. I call ahead and make a reservation if it is a busy night. This is ex- tremely helpful it you are at the beach or the Blue Ridge on holidays. The GPS gives you a few options such as fastest route, shortest route or straight line distance. When I’m just out exploring I set the device to the short- est route if time allows. This will generally take me through some nice little towns. However, this selection does not help me find the curvy roads that I like to ride on. Planning a cross country trip last year my friends and I worked pret- ty hard learning Garmin’s MapSource software to plan our route. The zumo allows you exchange your information via a SD card or USB to computer. Although pricy, as you explore the GPS’s protentual you will soon change your motorcycling experience.
