During the hour-long rally, a packed Red Bluff High Gym watched Golden Valley High's School's Joshua Sykes, a 6-foot-6 forward, capture the 24th annual Holiday Classic dunk title with a series of slams that had him going between his legs and sailing over two people. The school's faculty and staff followed with a frenzied medley that included routines set to George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone," Michael Jackson's "Bad," and Inner Circle's "Bad Boys." Teachers and staff dressed as bikers, cowboys and elves, after roping bad Santa's reindeer, danced through Lorde's "Royals," Bruno Mars' "Treasure," and Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark." The eclectic routine concluded with a menacing biker-gang Spartan riding to the center of the gym on a threewheeled motorcycle. Red Bluff's Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament concludes today. After hitting a 5-year low of 10 percent in October, the county's unemployment rate ticked back up to 10.5 percent in November, according to numbers released Friday by the Employment Development Department. A year ago the unemployment rate was 12.1 percent. November's half-point raise in unemployment could largely be attributed to the loss of 400 farm jobs as the harvest season wound down. There was a loss of 180 jobs in non farming industries. More than half of those came in the reduction of See JOBLESS, page 5A Dish feud with local stations drags on By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Daily News photo by Andre Byik Golden Valley High School's Joshua Sykes goes between the legs during Red Bluff Union High School's Holiday Classic dunk contest and rally Friday. A dispute between a satellite company and local television station operators is lingering into its third week and has left Northern California Dish Network customers without access to KRCR and KCVU programming. Channels 7 and 20 broadcasts were blacked out late Saturday Dec. 7. As a result the following day football fans missed the much anticipated divisional showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. Dish customers turning into their local ABC and FOX affiliates are prompted with a message with a phone number to call. The phone number leads to KRCR and KCVU. Dish Network's fairsatellite.com website says the Chico-Redding stations owned by operating partners Bonten Media Group and Esteem Broadcasting have blocked access to its broadcasts until Dish accepts their demands. KRCR's website includes a "Dish negotiations FAQs" describing its side of the dispute. KRCR says it is asking for fair reimbursement from what Dish already charges customers, an amount it says should be 3 cents per day. KRCR says Bonten Media began negotiations with Dish two months ago and extended the previous contract's expiration date to give Dish more time to make a decision. DUI crackdown planned for weekend Officers from the Red Bluff Police Department's DUI Enforcement Team will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the Department's ongoing traffic safety campaign. DUI Saturation Patrols will deploy 7 p.m. Dec. 21 through 3 a.m. Dec. 22 in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests. "This is a 'zero tolerance' crackdown so drive sober or get pulled over," said Chief Paul Nanfito. In Californian, this deadly crime led to 802 deaths in 2012 because someone failed to desig- nate a sober driver. Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed two lives and resulted in 227 injury crashes harming 258 of our friends and neighbors. DUI can impact the economy in addition to the pain and suffering of those immediately affected. Conservatively, a fatality has a $1.4 million impact, an injury $70,000, and a crash that only damages property averages nearly $9,000. "DUI enforcement will reduce collisions and make California roadways safer," Nanfito said. Funding for this program is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Call 911 to report drunk drivers.
