2B – Daily News – Saturday, January 15, 2011 FEATURES Dad disapproves of daughter’s decision Excessive yawning an enigma DEAR DR. GOTT: I am disabled Dear Annie: I am 55, married for 29 years, and the mother of three children. The prob- lem is our middle child, ‘‘Martina,’’ who is living with a 50-year -old divorced father of two. One of his children is married with kids, so our 24-year-old daugh- ter is living with a grandfather. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Martina lied to us for eight months, and when we found out about the relation- ship, we were furious and threw her out. The fight was nasty and physical, and the police were involved. Now my husband wants nothing to do with Martina, and our oldest daughter won’t speak to her sister. Our son doesn’t approve of Martina, but hasn’t cut her off. I have seen Martina a few times since our fight. I have told her that I love her but will never accept the relationship. Martina wants to come to our house for a visit. My husband says if she comes home, he will leave. But, Annie, I miss her terribly and don’t want to choose between my hus- band and my child. When I was young, my parents divorced, and I had to choose which one to invite for birthdays and holi- days. It was awful. What can I do? — Torn Mom Dear Torn: Martina is an adult, and she is not always going to make deci- sions that you will like. But you must allow her to make her own choices, even when you disagree, and even when there are unpleasant consequences — such as your husband’s refusal to welcome her home. But also understand that your family’s extreme cen- sure may convince Martina to stay with this man out of sheer stubbornness. Keep meeting with her elsewhere so you can see how she’s doing. She needs to know her family still loves and cares about her. Dear Annie: My 78- year-old mother-in-law has terrible hygiene and smells awful. She comes to our house, sometimes for weeks at a time, and will not take a bath or a shower. She believes washing ‘‘the important parts’’ constitutes sufficient cleanliness. We have suggested she bathe twice a week, telling her it will make her feel good, but it doesn’t help. The last time she was in our family room, our daughter asked if the baby had a messy diaper. I know she reads your column, so maybe if she sees it in black and white, she will do better. — Tired of Being Around the Funk Dear Tired: When was the last time Mom had a complete physical and an evaluation? It is not unusual for people her age to lose some sense of smell, and we suspect Mom does not real- ize there is an odor. She also may fear slipping in the bathtub, so be sure yours has grab bars and non-slip mats. Thank You For Your Support!! ❋ You donated about 20,000 lbs. of food during our Holiday Food Drive. This should feed local families all of the way into the summer months. ❋ 796 children received 3,156 toys worth $34,790 ❋ 443 children received 1,177 new pieces of clothing worth $11,894 ❋ The “Red-Kettle Bell-Ringer” Campaign raised $46,35058 A Special “Thank You” to Rolling Hills Casino & Bethel Assembly of God for extra help with the holiday food boxes. Contributions may be sent to: The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 935, Red Bluff, CA. 96080 Thank you for your support, Majors Frank & Susan Severs with extensive nerve damage from liver failure. I have a lot of problems. Just in the past few months, I’ve had spells where I yawn constantly. The problem usually starts shortly after I wake up, but it also happens later in the day. They aren’t wimpy little yawns, either, but those that start in your toes and gather momentum as they head north. By the time they reach my head, my mouth is wide open and I’m stretching my jaw as far as I can. This may go on for hours and simply wears me out, not to mention that it kinda hurts. Any ideas? Localized scleroderma can Dr. Peter Gott DEAR READER: Unless performed intentionally, yawning is an involuntary action involving many body parts. The mouth opens, the jaw drops, abdominal muscles flex, lungs expand, the diaphragm is pushed down, heart rate increases, and muscles and joints flex. The process is reversed as we force that air back out of the mouth. People of every age — even an 11- week-old fetus will yawn. And when we see someone do just that, we will likely follow along. To even read about the topic in my column will likely cause a person to yawn. Excessive yawning can be caused by a vasovagal reaction on the blood vessels and could indicate a cardiac problem, sleep apnea or excessive daytime fatigue. Because of this, you should address the subject with your doctor or cardiologist. Yawning does- n’t reflect boredom, as proven by athletes who will yawn prior to running a race or entering a swim meet. Therefore, I recom- mend you make that appointment so you can get to the bottom of the problem. To provide related information, I am sending you a copy of my Health Report “Sleep Wake Disorders.” Other readers who would like a copy should send a self- addressed stamped No. 10 envelope and a $2 check or money order payable to Newsletter and mailed to Newsletter, P.O. Box 167, Wickliffe, OH 44092-0167. Be sure to mention the title. DEAR DR. GOTT: Is there any cure for scleroderma? DEAR READER: The localized form of scleroderma affects only the skin, while sys- temic scleroderma damages the heart, lungs, kidneys and digestive system. Symptoms and treatment vary, depending on the type. Some drugs can dilate blood ves- sels, possibly reducing the severity of symptoms of conditions such as Raynaud’s disease and kidney and lung abnormalities. Physical ther- apists can help a patient work toward methods to manage pain, improve mobility, and increase strength. The appearance of skin lesions can be helped through ultraviolet-light exposure or laser surgery. On the home front, a person should remain active, protect the skin from cold, discontinue smoking, and refrain from eat- ing foods that contribute to heartburn or gas. Walking, yoga or tai chi might be to your liking. Should Raynaud’s be present, remember to protect your hands at all times, such as by wearing gloves when placing foods in or taking them out of the freezer, or when hanging clothes on the line to dry. DEAR DR. GOTT: I have read about plantar warts that your readers have. Well, I have seed warts almost over my complete back, and they have spread to other parts of my body. My grandfather also had them on his back. My back itches badly all the time. Are they inherited? Is there anything that will help me get rid of them? I have shown them to my dermatologist, and he said he could freeze them off but that was about all he could do. What do you think? DEAR READER: Seed warts are simply common warts with black dots that origi- nate from the blood vessels that surround them. They commonly appear on the face, fingers, soles of the feet and backs of the hands. They are contagious and caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that enters the skin through a simple cut or crack. Latent infection can also occur in people who harbor HPV without skin trauma. A number of treatment methods are available. However, because there is no sin- gle cure, some may appear ineffective. One option is cryotherapy. Liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the wart and can be painful but effective. In my opinion, this is your best bet with the process performed by a derma- tologist; however, liquid nitrogen can be purchased without a prescription. News tip?
