6A – Daily News – Saturday, January 15, 2011 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Movies and games day The youth at Red Bluff First Christian Church are having a movies and game day on Monday, Jan. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. at 926 Madison St. in the base- ment. All youth from 7th to 12th grades are invited to join in the fun. There is no cost. Information is available from Youth Pastor Chase Knudsen at 527-4688 or visit www.firstchristianred- bluff.org. Host registration begins for 2011 National Bible Bee Host registration for the third annual National Bible Bee opens on Feb. 1, and will remain open until March 31. Contestant registration runs from April 1 through May 31, and official contest mate- rials will be released on June 1. Every contestant will receive a Bible, Scripture memory cards, inductive Bible study curriculum and a T-shirt as part of registration. The Shelby Kennedy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the spiritual growth of the entire family through Bible study, Scripture memorization and prayer, launched the National Bible Bee in 2009. The competition chal- lenges youth from ages 7 to 18 years in Bible knowledge and memorization, first at local contests held around the country at the end of August, and then at a national competition held in November for the top 300 contestants from across the nation. The winners are awarded $260,000 in cash prizes, as well as other awards. The foundation provides Bible Bee Local Hosts with a turn-key program full of resources, ideas, and support in order to organize a local bee and support contestant families as they work through the age-appropriate Bible studies and memorization requirements throughout the Summer. Learn more and register to be a local host at www.BibleBee.org. Egypt church bombing sours Coptic Christmas in US LOS ANGELES (AP) — A time of joy for Cop- tic Christians in the U.S. has turned into a time of somber reflection because of a brutal terrorist attack on a church in Egypt. A New Year’s Day bombing that killed 21 wor- shippers at a church in Egypt has soured the Christ- mas holiday, which Copts celebrate on Jan. 7. Coptic leaders from New Jersey to California have declared days of additional fasting and prayer after the bombing and canceled the concerts, chil- dren’s plays, receptions and feasts that traditionally mark the holiday. Helena Botros of Los Angeles says that instead of spending money on gifts for family, she will donate the money to victims of the bombing. She says she is now more grateful that she’s able to celebrate the miracle of the Eucharist without fear. Is that fair? Let’s talk about fairness. One per- son is born with beauty and grace that is over the top. Another is born with deformities and health issues. Is that fair? Two people get hired at the same time and one gets laid off during a recession and the other doesn’t. Is that fair? One person is born and raised in the deepest, darkest, poorest part of a third world country and lives with star- vation and deprivation his whole life. Another person is born and raised in a fine home in a modern American town with excess and pleasure. Is that fair? What I have sensed is that there is an awful lot in the world that isn’t fair. As kids we all had a time when we were playing games and someone did something we didn’t like. I can remember it clearly. "He did this thing – that isn’t fair!" I have mediated many arguments as a teacher where fairness was at question. Cheaters are not appreciated. No one tolerates people who get moved up into a line or cut –that will just fry some of us. My kids are sure to let me know if one of them gets more attention than the other, the better seat in the car, has a bigger or more snacks. Fairness is a big deal for people and it has been since there were people. When I think about the issue of fairness and equity I remember a story I heard. An accident occurred and a car rolled over and trapped a family inside. A group of people come along and tried to flip the car back over and get the people out but they couldn’t exert enough force to turn the car over. They are about ready to give up when one more person comes along and assists with the push and the car goes over. The man who came last got all the credit. Was that fair? Who was the most valuable person in the group turning the car back over – the one who came first or the one that came last? To the persons in the car they were all heroes. Proverbs 21:3 says, "Do what is right and fair; that pleases the LORD more than bringing him sacrifices." But it’s not fair! We deserve more! We worked harder! We were more faithful! How dare you show those unde- serving people kindness! Is that fair? Dan Steigman GodTalk Mankind is so worried that some- one else is going to get a better deal than we are or that we are going to miss out on some goodies that some- one else has. We are looking for a "fair deal" that gives us more than our neighbor, more than we deserve, because we are who we are. God has just the opposite plan. Look higher with our goals – past ourselves to pleasing Him and see what that will get us. Counter Greed Arvind Khetia, engineer and a Hindu: The steward- ship of the environment is everyone's responsibility. To fulfill this responsibility, we need to re-examine our way of life of rampant con- sumerism and waste brought about by human greed. To counter our addiction for material goods, Mahat- ma (Mohandas) Gandhi called for the revival of inner life. Gandhi, by his own inner transformation, showed that the fulfillment of human life is not in material abundance but in contemplative simplicity. He believed that, "The reforms required are more from within than without." The inner transforma- tion requires the clarity of vision and will to guide one's actions by the spiritu- al wisdom that is present in every faith tradition. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches us that life's true fulfillment is not in satisfying our lower nature, which is governed by the senses, but it is in our higher spiritual nature, gov- erned by the knowledge of the presence of the divine within and in all of the exis- tence. In the Upanishads, it is stated that, "Whatever there is changeful in this chang- ing world, all that must be seen as the manifestation of the divine." So, God's cre- ation is to be viewed with reverence and given due care and not to be exploited for profit. One must treat the abundance of nature as Rom 12:1 says, "So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer." We can get all excited about human fairness or we can look higher. (The verse from Proverbs tells us what to do, not what to expect.) When my life was a wreck I was rescued by people who loved God and through God loved me. When no one else cared they were there to hold me up, feed me and guide me. That love expressed was "not fair" but it was merciful. Through their love I came to know what it was to be loved by the Living God. Now I do my best to take what I learned and share it too. We can either be worried about earthly fairness or heavenly love. I’ll go with heaven every time. Pastor Dan Steigman is the longtime pastor of Believers Church of Christ in Corning. He is one of the most faithful contributors to the GodTalk feature, having been involved since the beginning. Voices of faith: How can we be better stewards of the environment? (MCT) a blessing for all of mankind and enjoy it with the attitude of nonviolence, compassion and selfless- ness. Behave Moderately Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City: God created the Earth and the skies and then mankind. "Now, behold! Your Lord said to the angels: I am placing upon the earth a human successor to steward it." (Qur'an 2:30) Thus our duty in this life is to worship God and live in obedience to him (Islam), being stew- ards of the Earth. Muslims are taught in the Qur'an and Hadith to behave moderately in all things. "Eat and drink of that which Allah has provided and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth." (Qur'an 2:60) We should plant trees and other plants to benefit both ourselves and the living things around us. We may use animals for our needs but must care for and be kind to them. We are to conserve water and not be wasteful of any resource. We should keep our envi- ronment clean and fruitful. Islam emphasizes the necessity and importance of environmental protection so that man can live in har- mony with nature as well asachieve sustainable development, enrich life on Earth and make best use of available resources.
