Charged with shooting fawn pet in family Officers of this county are in quest of two men who shot and killed a fawn near the home of Chet Flournoy, a sheepman of the Henleyville district. The little deer was a pet of the family, especially of the children, and they were indignant at the pair responsible for depriving them of the fawn. — Dec. 19, 1923 DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY Christmas is rapidly approaching and, if you are anything like I am, you have not completed your gift list. Here are a few suggestions to help expedite this memorable occasion. These are ideas that make wonderful gifts for your gardening friend or a gift you as a gardener can give. Let's begin with a plain clay pot which we will decorate and use as our container and gift wrapping. The size and shape will depend on its eventual contents. You can purchase pots for as little as $2.00 at many local stores. The next step is vital. You must seal the pot before decorating it. I tell you this because last year I skipped this step with disastrous results. About a month after I painted the pots they began to peel. Not a pretty sight. Ask at your local paint store for the best sealant for this project. Now it's time for the fun – decorating. To decorate your pot there is a myriad of choices. Being very unartistic my decoration of choice is spray paint. Yes, just point and spray. If I am feeling very adventurous, I use paint tape and make colored stripes of different colors. And if I'm super adventurous I will even The 2014 4-H Fun Night committee is accepting silent auction donations for the upcoming event. Fun Night is the only fundraiser for the Tehama County 4-H program, funds raised from this event help send members to state conferences, purchase awards and to run the county 4-H Youth Development Program. Patrons at this year's event will be transported back into the time of the Renaissance with kings, maidens, pheasants, songs and games. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a great family night with a silent auction, tri-tip dinner with all of the fixings for $7 a plate, live entertainment, and carnival-style games to play for 25 cents a ticket. Although I fall short in artistic ability many of you are quite clever as is my daughter. About ten years ago, she tole painted a pot for me which I still love and use. She used acrylic paint which obviously was a good decision. If decorating a pot is not your thing, you can go with an unadorned clay pot or purchase one that is already decorated. One thing for sure, no gardener has too many pots. Your pot is ready to go. What will you do with it now? Here are some suggestions: 1. Persimmons – We still have fresh persimmons on the tree — although the birds are rapidly thinning them out — so, fresh persimmons, dried persimmons — it only takes about 24 hours to dry them — or persimmon cookies all make wonderful gifts. 2. Nuts – We are still shelling out our walnuts. Walnut pieces or halves make fantastic gifts. If you want to get really fancy, candied or spiced nuts are great. 3. Dried Fruit – During the summer and fall we dry tomatoes, pitted cherries, and pears. A bag of any and all of your dried fruit will be appreciated. 4. Mandarin Oranges - The sugar is up and we picked before the freeze. They make super gifts. 5. Potted Plants – Put potting soil, water and a plant in your pot. For outdoor plants ornamental cabbage and cyclamen help brighten the winter scape. If you are a gardener you probably have all kinds of indoor plants rooting – share. 6. Seeds – Any gardener will appreciate seed packets — although, watch carefully as most of the packets I found were out dated — rhizome, or bulbs. Have fun with your Christmas giving. Give a gift of gardening. It will be appreciated all year long. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc.
