32 www.DesertMessenger.com December 18, 2013 In Memoriam Evelyn "Evie" Carol (Highsmith) Sorenson 1940-2013 Evelyn "Carol" was born August 14, 1940 and passed away on November 17th, 2013. Carol, formerly of Kent, Wash, resided in Quartzsite, Arizona for the last 19 years. She leaves behind her loving husband, Les Sorenson three loving sons, Greg, Douglas and Steven Highsmith Evelyn "Evie" Carol and their families; one sister JoAnn Highsmith Sorenson Jones and her family in Selah, WA; 1940 - 2013 two brothers, James and Jack and their families; also three grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly and Dana Highsmith, two great grandchildren, Maddison and Harleigh Highsmith. Many nieces and nephews all loved her dearly. She loved the outdoors, playing games, loved to travel and being with her husband and their dogs. She loved the winter in Quartzsite with all of the new faces and all of her old friends. Carol loved people very much. All of Carol's Rainbow Acres neighbors miss her so much. Carol left us peacefully in her sleep to go and join her mother and father and the rest of her family that had left this mortal world before her. Carol is in heaven teaching the angels how to play golf, card games, how to ride quads in the desert, and line dance. Carol was so full of fun; she was a great adventurer. As I parked beside my winter home in Quartzsite, Arizona after being away for four months, I glanced around and noticed that a lot of the stuff that used to be in back of Caryl's home was gone. I knew Caryl went to Alaska every summer to escape the stiffling heat and to visit her son and his family, but she was always back before I arrived. I counted on that; seeing Caryl made the transition from road to home a little easier. I checked with the neighbors; they hadn't seen her. Oh well, I thought, she's just staying in Alaska a little longer this year. Last night I had a very realistic dream. Caryl was in what might have been a wheel chair, but she was in her usual good spirits. She looked great. She was smiling and had on one of the hats she always wore when she went out. There were several people present, but I couldn't identify them. Although we didn't speak, she recognized me right away, smiled, and winked at me. When I saw her wink, I thought everything was alright. Then I woke up and remembered everything wasn't, Two days ago, I stopped by Caryl's son Phil's shop on the main drag in Quartzsite to inquire about his mom. Phil wasn't there, but I knew his salesperson, Meme, I liked Meme. She was a ball-of-fire in a very small package: vivacious, warm, friendly, energetic, and a great dancer. In fact the only time I ran into her was on the dance floor at Silly Al's Pizza or The Yacht Club. The last time I saw her she was with Phil at The Yacht Club on Halloween night. They always had great costumes. This year Meme was inside a huge, white, round "egg." Written on the front were the words "I've just been laid." A little racy but funny! Only his laughing eyes shone through the slot in the front. There was a kind of shelf below that with the words "free mammograms." Again, a bit racy but funny! Of course, I placed my name on his long waiting list! I talked to Phil that October night and asked where his mother was. It didn't surprise me to hear she was still in Alaska. He said she was fine, but was scheduled to have an operation the coming Wednesday. I told him to be sure to say hello for me when he talked to her. I hope he did. I hadn't talked to Phil since then, and none of the neighbors had any information about Caryl. That day in the shop, I asked Meme if Phil was here. She replied that he was in Alaska. I wasn't surprised because I knew Caryl was there. "How's his mother," I asked. "She passed away two days ago," Meme said. SILENCE. A deep sadness enveloped me, and even now as I write this, tears come to my eyes. "From the operation?" I asked. "No," replied Meme. She had a stroke, was bedridden for weeks, and didn't even have the operation. As always when faced with death, I didn't know what to say or do. Before leaving, Meme gave me a business card with Phil's email on it. I think of Caryl often. I miss her....miss her....miss her. And I am SO thankful that I saw her in my dream one last time.
