When it comes to concert tours, WinterJam is definitely the Buzz! In fact it
has been the most attended concert tour in the world for the first quarter each
of the last two years. Therefore this week we are presenting part 1 of a two-part
series of articles in Up & Coming Weekly on the WinterJam Tour Spectacular!
The first stop of the tour will be at the PNC Arena in Raleigh on Jan. 3. The
tour will also visit the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville on March 13. Once again
admission is a $10 donation at the door. In return you get to enjoy 10 artists
and the very engaging speaker, Nick Hall. The artist lineup this year includes:
The Newsboys, Thousand Foot Krutch, Lecrae, Tenth Avenue North, Plumb,
Newsong, Colton Dixon, Love & The Outcome, Everfound and Derek Minor.
Newsong, the band that founded WinterJam, has insisted on keeping the cost
low so everyone can afford to come. The goal isn't to fill arenas, it is more to
be able to present a life-changing message to as many people as possible.
I had the opportunity to speak with Mike Donehey of Tenth Avenue North
recently about the upcoming tour. I asked him if he gets more anxious in
front of larger crowds like they see on the WinterJam tour. His response was
very interesting.
"The anxiety I get is the fear that I will allow the applause get to my head.
And because I'm being cheered and acclaimed on stage, I'll forget that my
calling is to be a servant of all; not to be famous," said Donehey.
Several artists like the Newsboys and Tenth Avenue North are returning to
the tour. One of the newcomers, to the tour and to the Christian music format,
is Lecrae. When asked about the new guy Donehey said, he is a "solid dude. I
think a lot of people will be surprised at how purely the gospel can be preached
through rap music."
WinterJam is fun, entertaining, exciting, but above all it is an opportunity for
each of us to have a genuine encounter with the God who created us. The tour
starts in Raleigh on Jan. 3 and winds its way to the Crown Coliseum on March
13. Bring someone with you as you attend either or both shows, and prepare to
have an experience of a lifetime!
