Of those, there were 14 students, one teacher and three paraprofessionals representing Red Bluff Union Elementary School District, said Janice Forest, director of special education for the district. "It's an annual event that is intended to serve special education students from preschool through 12th grade," Forest said. "The students get to participate in team sport activities like a climbing wall and other motor activities." Tehama County has participated in the event, which is sponsored by the Northern California Adapted Physical Education Consortium and California State University, Chico, since 2000. Levi Gonzalez, a special day classroom teacher at Jackson Heights, attended the event with some of his students. "We had a wonderful experience at Chico Sports Day," Gonzalez said. "There were a number of activities for the kids to explore including team sports, gross and fine motor activities, and sensory exploration. It was a well-organized event, and a positive atmosphere." Gonzalez is very thankful that Jody Johnson, a Tehama County Department of Education adaptive physical education specialist who runs several Tehama County events for special education students throughout the year, invited his class, he said. "My students were actively engaged and did not want to leave!," Gonzalez said." I am very grateful that my class had the opportunity to attend the event."
