Sigma Chi - University of Alabama

Chapter Eternal G. Dewey Vann '46 entered Chapter Eternal in May of 2013. He was a native of Birmingham and a graduate of Phillips High School. Dewey served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II. After boot camp, he was offered Officer Candidate School, but chose to return to the University of Alabama following his service. From radio school he was sent to Green's Bayou near Galveston, Texas, where his crew was formed. They trained in the gulf before being sent to Little Creek, Virginia Amphibious Base. The crew trained for six months and were then sent through the Panama Canal, up the West Coast, and to several islands before engaging in the invasion of Okinawa. Dewey worked for Retail Credit, US Steel, and Puritan Chemical in his early years. Later he worked for St. Regis Co., Horner Waldorf, and Champion International. He was a charter member of Green Valley Baptist Church and the first treasurer. He and his wife, Edie, were season ticket holders for Alabama Football for many years and he enjoyed meeting his friends to talk sports, especially Alabama football. Dewey is survived by his wife, his daughters, Annette and Carolyn, and three grandchildren. James B. Anderson '50 entered Chapter Eternal on October 25, 2012. He attended the University of Alabama on three athletic scholarships, playing football, basketball, and running track. He was a member of the 1946 Rose Bowl Team. James was president of Anderson Homes Company in Meridian, Miss., which he founded in 1953. He was past chairman of the Meridian Housing Authority, member and chairman of the Meridian Planning Commission Board, and former chairman of the Board of Directors at Great Southern National Bank, serving on the board from 1976 to 2012. He was a Scout Master and received numerous recognitions from the Boy Scous of America. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. James is survived by his wife, Joann, daughters, Janet and Kathleen, and son, James. Arthur J. Fox entered Chapter Eternal on October 18, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Joann, and three sons: Arthur III, Thomas, and Alexander. Lt. Col. Phillip L. Newton '53 entered Chapter Eternal on February 2, 2013. Robert "Don" Woodall '54 entered Chapter Eternal on April 30, 2013. He served 20 years in the Air Force, retiring as major in 1973. He spent 21 years as airfield manager at McChord AFB, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Lakewood Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and treasurer. Robert is survived by his wife, Sarah, and his three daughters and their families. James "Dex" Reagan '57 entered Chapter Eternal on February 9, 2013, at his home in Montgomery, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and children: Craig, Pam, Tommy, Jeff, and Dea. Questions? Billy W. Tate, Jr. '65 entered Chapter Eternal on April 6, 2013. He was an exceptional gentleman, friend, and mentor to many young people in both Alabama and Tennessee. Billy taught at Selma High School for 14 years. During this time he built the debate program from a small club into an organization that won many national trophies. In 1983 he joined the faculty of Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA) in Nashville and again grew the program. A Life Loyal Sigma Chi, Billy served as Consul as an undergraduate. Andy Grimes '95 entered Chapter Eternal on April 4, 2013. He was a proud member of Sigma Chi and a member of Grace Life Baptist Church in Bessemer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, golfing, and certainly Alabama football. He is survived by his parents, Cindy and Robert.
