The Raiders announced their decision not to exercise a two-year, $5 million option on Cable’s contract for 2011 and ’12, two days after wrapping up an 8-8 season that gave Oakland its first non-losing record since winning the 2002 AFC championship. The Raiders now begin their search for their sixth coach since Jon Gruden left for Tampa Bay following the 2001 season. Cable lasted longer than any of the previous five, with a 17-27 record since being promoted from offensive line coach to interim head coach early in the 2008 season after Lane Kiffin was fired. Cable had wide support from his players, who credited him with helping make the team a con- tender in the AFC West this season after a run of seven straight years of at least 11 losses. But that was not enough to persuade owner Al Davis to bring him back for a third full season. The Raiders could have waited two weeks to make this decision but acted quickly. The move comes the same day the Raiders granted the San Francisco 49ers permission to interview offensive coor- dinator Hue Jackson for their vacant head coaching job. Red Bluff led the two-time defend- ing section champions with three min- utes left in the game, but fell apart offensively down the stretch in their Eastern Athletic League opener. turnovers into easy layups on the other end and avoided an upset by ending the game with a 17-2 run. Panthers’ star Sterling Smith sealed the game with a dunk in the closing seconds to cap his 27-point, 16- rebound night. Chico improved to 10-1 with the win and a short-handed Spartans team dropped to 4-9. Red Bluff held a 49-44 lead with four minutes left after Ian Hill connect- ed with his fifth 3-pointer of the game on a smart assist by Zane Medeiros. But the Spartans soon lost their rhythm on offense and Chico took advantage with their transition speed. David Leavitt and Kurt Kitayama gave Smith some much-needed offen- sive help down the stretch. Chico completed their comeback when Smith was intentionally fouled as he was driving for what appeared to be an easy layup. Smith converted one free throw and then posted up on the inbound play and scored an easy basket to put the Pan- thers up 51-49. Red Bluff wouldn’t score for the next two minutes. Storm Lewis and Jonah McInnis each finished with 10 points and Carlos Tapia had nine for the the Spartans, who are off until a Wednesday, Jan. 12 trip to Shasta.
