Yon Clarion Bell Mu Foundation Financial Report O ur endowment continues to grow thanks to positive market performance, donations from the brotherhood, and positive cash flow from our various properties and assets. We started the year with a total portfolio of $772,271. As of November 4, 2013, we have a portfolio value of $851,450, a 14.8% gain year to date. We have seen appreciation of $110,000, but have used $32,000 for various projects and liabilities. Our endowment is essential to the long-term success of DKE and we continue to maintain a long-term, growth-oriented 'tilt' to the portfolio. Allocating approximately 65% equities and 35% fixed income, our portfolio is well diversified and carries slightly less risk than the market, taking on approximately 85% of the total risk of the comparable benchmark. The portfolio has yielded a consistently positive Sharpe Ratio (a measurement of risk-adjusted performance), annualizing at 1.25. Brother Rich Sotell '75 and the team at Kraematon Investment Advisors Inc. deserve our thanks for a job well done. My name is Adam Coccari, and I graduated from Colgate in 2008, making me a 149 DKE. I came from Santa Monica, but both of my parents actually met while at Colgate. My mom was in the second female class at Colgate, and my dad played rugby and wrestled all four years, graduating in 1970. I now live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and attend The Ross School of Business for my MBA, and soon I will move to Seattle to work full-time at Microsoft in product marketing. How has being a Mu Chapter member impacted your life? DKE taught me to truly respect and honor tradition and the amazing things that can be accomplished by a group of people who work hard and have common goals. The friends I met at Colgate who would become my DKE brothers helped me throughout my time at school, and have been an incredible support network since graduation. Mu Chapter taught me how to form close relationships with all types of people and varied personalities, and to work for something greater than myself. How have you stayed involved with DKE? I have stayed close with many brothers, and worked to stay up to date with the brotherhood. I also support DKE when I can during this time of transition. What is your favorite undergraduate memory? Enjoying the final graduation party at the house with my entire family in attendance, and playing a concert in the dining room. Walking downstairs and seeing all my friends playing a game with my cousins and chanting "Team Coccari" was one of my favorite memories of all time. What have you been doing professionally since graduation? Support the Mu of DKE Foundation After Colgate, I moved back to Santa Monica and worked as a 4th grade teacher. I taught all subjects, but focused mainly on math. I loved teaching, and used a variety of fun games and technology to help enhance my lessons and engage my students. I found that using digital games as reinforcement and incentives for the kids was very effective. When the iPad came out in 2010, I saw the great potential it had to engage students, but there was a lack of truly fun apps available for teaching math. I decided to create a company to develop innovative educational apps for kids, and designed the first product, an arcade-style educational video game that helps students practice arithmetic. Palisade Ave #5228 Englewood, NJ 07631 Thank you for your support. Check out Math Evolve on the Apple and Google Play stores. After 18 months of managing the developers and building an audience online, I released Math Evolve: A Fun Math Game, on the iOS App Store. Math Evolve was met with a positive critical reception and won the award for Best Educational Game of 2011 in the Best App Ever Awards. It has been downloaded more than 200,000 times and is used in classrooms around the world to help support math practice. The experience taught me how much I enjoyed building software products and marketing, so I decided to go back for my MBA to pursue a career in tech. I still manage Math Evolve on the side and am working on designing our next product. Gentleman, Scholar, or Jolly Good Fellow? Jolly Good Fellow. You can contact Adam at adamcoccari149@gmail.com.
