In Europe, Greeks, Irish and Spaniards planned to party through the night to help put a year of economic woe behind them. And in New York, nearly a million New Year’s Eve revelers were expected to cram into Times Square to watch the midnight ball drop, just days after the city got clobbered by a blizzard. As rainclouds cleared, thousands of people, many sporting large, brightly colored wigs, gathered in Madrid’s cen- tral Puerta del Sol square to take part in ‘‘Las Uvas,’’ or ‘‘The Grapes,’’ a tradition in which peo- ple eat a grape for each of the 12 chimes of mid- night. Chewing and swallow- ing the grapes to each tolling of the bell is sup- posed to bring good luck, while cheating is frowned on and revelers believe it brings misfortune. ‘‘I’m here to make my wishes for the new year. If you eat the grapes your wishes will come true,’’ said beautician Anita Var- gas, 22. New Year’s Eve tornados kill at least 6 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Tornadoes fueled by unusually warm weath- er pummeled the South and Midwest on Friday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more across Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. Forecasters said storms could hit along a stretch from near Chica- go to New Orleans later in the evening as New Year’s Eve celebrations begin. Three people died in the northwestern Arkansas hamlet of Cincinnati when a tornado touched down just before sunrise, and three others died when a storm spawned by the same weather system ripped up Community Resource Guide Community Resource Guide 2011 2011 Corning Annual Coming soon in the Red Bluff Daily News Friday, January 28, 2011 Corning 2011 Deadline to place an ad is Tuesday, January 11, 2011 Red Bluff Annual Coming soon in the Red Bluff Daily News Saturday, February 26, 2011 Red Bluff 2011 Deadline to place an ad is Friday, February 4, 2011 To place your ad Call (530) 527-2151 Today! 10% off your ad in each section when you buy an ad in Corning Today & Red Bluff Today the Missouri countryside near Rolla. A number of storms were also reported in the St. Louis area. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said storms later Friday could do more damage from northern Illinois to the Gulf of Mexico as com- munities prepare to mark the start of the new year. Forecasters posted tornado watches for the region that were set to run until 8 p.m. ‘‘It sucked me out of my house and carried me across the road and dropped me,’’ Chris Sise- more of Cincinnati told The Associated Press on Friday. ‘‘I was Superman for a while. ... You’re just free-floating through the air. Trees are knocking you and smacking you down.’’ Sisemore said he tried to crawl under his bed and cling to the carpet, fearful a nearby pecan tree would fall into his home. As he nursed cuts, scrapes and bruises to his arms, knees and back, he recalled open- ing his eyes as he flew because he didn’t believe he’d see 2011. Standoff at bank ends PEARLAND, Texas (AP) — Police say a stand- off at a suburban Houston bank where two gunmen took hostages has ended after a negotiation of more than four hours. Pearland Police Lt. Onesmio Lopez says the two remaining hostages as well as the second suspect inside the Chase Bank branch have left the build- ing. Three bank employees who hid in a closer also were taken out. Five other hostages were released unharmed and the other suspect was appre- hended earlier. The State Department correspondence, written as Karzai was assembling a Cabinet shortly after his 2009 re-election, reveals just how little influence U.S. officials have over the Afghan leader on pressing issues such as corruption. Reining in graft is seen as vital to Afghanistan’s long-term stability. Presi- dent Barack Obama last month cited an urgent need for political and economic progress even as military successes have blunted the insurgency in some regions. Stocks mixed on final day NEW YORK (AP) — Stock indexes were mixed Friday in quiet New Year’s Eve trading. The last day of the year contrasted with a some- times gut-wrenching 2010. Despite investors’ concerns about the U.S. economy, the possibility of European countries defaulting on debt, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index and the Dow Jones industrial average are both up about 14 percent for the year, including divi- dends. The Nasdaq com- posite index, meanwhile, is up about 18 percent for the year after dividends. In midday trading trad- ing Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 3 points, or less than 0.1 per- cent, to 11,573. The Stan- dard & Poor’s 500 index rose less than a point to 1,258. The Nasdaq compos- ite index dipped 9, or 0.3 percent, to 2,654.
