Simply the best Kennedy Center pays tribute to artists By Kyla Brewer TV Media time. Star-studded red carpets may be all the rage, but for those who value quality over quantity, only one awards show will do. The annual Kennedy Center A Honors pay tribute to the life’s work of great artists from a range of disciplines, and offer a mere five awards per year. This year, highlights from the 33rd annual ceremony air Tuesday, Dec. 28, on CBS. The two-hour special includes performances and tributes to the featured art- ists by their peers and others in- fluenced by their work. As always, the honorees in- clude some of the most influen- tial artists of contemporary cul- ture. This time around, the field is music heavy with country singer/ songwriter Merle Haggard, com- poser and lyricist Jerry Herman and songwriter and musician Paul McCartney. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey also made this year’s list, along with dancer, choreographer and director Bill T. Jones. ”The Kennedy Center cele- brates five individuals who have spent their lives enriching, inspir- wards shows are a dime a dozen it seems, with new ones popping up all the sented by someone heavily influ- enced by the honorees’ work. Pre-taped segments also provide audience members with a first- hand look at the performers’ ca- reers, although many of them, such as McCartney, need no in- troduction. This isn’t the first time the for- Merle Haggard is among the recipients of a Kennedy Center Honor this year ing and elevating the cultural vi- brancy of our nation and the world,” said Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein. Designed to recognize life- time contributions to American culture through art, the Kennedy Center Honors are among the most esteemed performing arts awards, and past winners in- clude some of the world’s most beloved and respected artists. Fred Astaire, Richard Rodgers, Martha Graham, Bob Hope, Lu- cille Ball, Dizzy Gilespie, Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand are some of the luminous names on the list. Although this year’s gala was actually taped on Dec. 5, CBS has established a tradition of airing the special between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. It’s proven to be successful, as the award- winning special regularly draws millions of viewers, and it has aired on CBS every year since its inception in 1978. The Kennedy Center Honors are traditionally awarded to the recipients at a State Department dinner, this year hosted by Secre- tary of State Hillary Clinton, the night before the ceremony. This allows the honorees time to sit back and enjoy the gala from their seats among the pres- ident and first lady. The guest stars and performers scheduled to appear in the show are kept a secret, even to the recipients, to allow for the element of surprise. Each recipient is honored in a separate segment, often pre- mer Beatle has been up for the award. In 2002, it was an- nounced that he would receive a Kennedy Center Honor, but he withdrew because of a schedul- ing conflict. At the time, it was explained that the honor would merely be postponed for a year. However, 2003’s honorees were James Brown, Carol Bur- nett, Loretta Lynn, Mike Nichols and Itzhak Perlman. Not a Beatle in sight. Obviously, there were no hard feelings and in September of this year, it was announced he would finally be given the award. In fact, 2010 has been a good year for McCartney, who just months ago received another honor from President Barack Obama. In June, he accepted the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House. His fellow Kennedy Center re- cipients are similarly decorated. Hard-edged country star Hag- gard was part of the movement that created the legendary twang of the Bakersfield Sound. Though he was in and out of de- tention centers in his youth, the musician was pardoned for all past crimes by then-governor Ronald Reagan in 1972.
