That takes us to Tom Ricketts, one of the most prolific filmmak- ers of the silent-film era, as the earliest known actor to play Ebe- neezer Scrooge. He did so in a 1908 short version of “A Christ- mas Carol,” produced by Chica- go’s Essanay Studios. Ricketts ei- ther starred in or directed nearly 350 films in his 31 years in the moving-picture business. The Brits win again for the first “talkie” version of the tale. The 1935 film “Scrooge” starred Seymour Hicks as the now audi- bly cantankerous old miser. Dickens’s story was first pub- lished on Dec. 19, 1843, and has never gone out of print. It’s now considered by most to be the most beloved Christmas tale of all time.
