The Helix Highlanders knocked off Red Bluff 35-23 in the opening round of the 2010 Holiday Classic revenging their defeat in last year’s third place game. Red Bluff heads to today’s 3:30 p.m. consolation semifinal after their shots rimmed, clanged and did everything but swish Thursday night. Kenny Keys opened the game for Helix with a dunk, but after that the Highlanders found them- selves having just as poor of a shooting night as Red Bluff was having. Red Bluff led 15-14 at half- time after two quarters of solid defensive play from both sides where every point was scratched and clawed out. Storm Lewis opened the third quarter with a Red Bluff bucket, but the Spartans wouldn’t score again for the rest of the period and Helix did just enough offen- sively on their own end to take a 23-17 lead. Titus Young and Keys then worked the score to 29-19 before Red Bluff responded. Tyler Blaser was fouled attempting a 3-pointer and sank all three of his free throws to pull the Spartans within seven points. But that’s as close as Red Bluff would get. On their next offensive pos- session, which was a snapshot of the game, Eric Vidal and Jonah McInnis earned Red Bluff sec- ond and third chances to score with offensive rebounds, but each time the Spartans couldn’t knock down an open look. Young then sealed the game with an acrobatic and-one layup to put Helix up 34-22 with 2:58 remaining. McInnis was Red Bluff’s only solid offensive option, racking up 11 points off the bench. Lewis scratched out six points and eight rebounds. Vidal finished with 10 boards. Helix was led by an 11-point, nine-rebound performance from Keys. Tommie Young added nine and Titus Young had seven points for the Highlanders who play at 8:30 p.m. today in a semifinal game. Lady Cards rally back for win GIRLS HOOPS Corning 52 Etna 44 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Corning survived a first half scare and knocked off the Etna Lady Lions 52-44, Thurs- day, to advance to the consolation championship at the 2010 Holiday Clas- sic. For the second straight day at the Classic, Etna put a scare in a higher division team, but could- n’t pull off the upset. Tandy Thackeray scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half as Etna held a double-digit lead over Corning in the sec- ond quarter, before the Cardinals woke up. The Lady Cardinals received a four-point trip down the floor in the wan- ing minutes of the first half when Brittany Garrett was fouled scoring two of her game-high 22 points. Garrett missed the free throw attempt, but Corn- ing won the offensive rebound and worked the ball back to their star cen- ter who was fouled again. This time Garrett con- nected on both free throws and a possession later following a Shelby Long bucket the Cardinals had cut Etna’s lead to 25- 22. Garrett paraded to the free throw line all game long, shooting 8-for-15 from the charity stripe. The Corning defense then found the answer to stop Thackeray in the sec- ond half, switching up defensive assignments to have a quicker guard defend her. Thackeray scored just one more bucket in the final 16 minutes. Etna tried to slow down Garrett with a dou- ble-team, but the Cardi- nals began making the extra pass and taking advantage of open outside looks. Marisa Vinson hit a pair of second half 3- pointers on her way to eight points and Shyanne Petty also connected from long distance as part of a seven-point game. Etna stayed within striking distance in the second half, but their backs were broken when Catherine Kinkle banked in a 3-pointer to put the Cardinals up 50-42 with two minutes to play. “Today was really the first time we started mov- ing the ball and sharing it,” Corning coach Kurt Eller said. Corning’s poor show- ing on Wednesday in the opening round and slow start Thursday could have been cause for concern for Eller. But the Corning coach said his team with a schedule of midweek games and weekend tour- naments has been missing too many practices and falling back into bad habits. Those habits disap- peared long enough in the second half for the Cardi- nals to advance to a Northern Athletic League showdown against West Valley, Saturday at noon in the consolation cham- pionship. Angelica Lopez had a strong performance in limited time backing up Vinson at point guard. “She came in and had a nice spark for us,” Eller said. Garrett grabbed 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Heather Menne had a double-double for Etna with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Etna plays Central Val- ley at 9 a.m. Saturday in the seventh place game. Daily News photo by Rich Greene Paradise point guard Zach Saylors drives to the basket in front of Lake Oswego’s Mitch Lomax.
