Holiday concert for scholarships California State University, Chico's Department of Music and Theatre gets the holiday season off to a resounding start with the annual Glorious Sounds of the Season! concerts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-7. Proceeds from the performances go towards music scholarships for CSU, Chico students. Presented in Harlen Adams Theatre, Glorious Sounds of the Season! has become a Chico-area holiday tradition. Sold-out performances have become the norm the past several years. Concert coordinator Dr. David Scholz recommends anyone interested in attending one of the concerts purchase a ticket "sooner than later" to insure getting a good seat. Glorious Sounds of the Season! features various music ensembles from the department, including the Wind Ensemble, Jazz XPress, A Cappella Choir, Brass Choir, Chamber Singers, and the University Chorus, as well as student and faculty soloists, small ensembles and performers from the Chico community, including the Children's Choir of Chico. The Centennial Organ is also featured during the performances. There will be several opportunities for the audience to join in with the performers by singing along on various seasonal favorites, such as "Silent Night," "Deck the Halls" and "Jingle Bells." All in all, more than 25 musical selections will be performed. "This is a unique holiday concert because the audience will hear such a variety of fabulous musical ensembles in one night," said Scholz. "It is a fast-paced concert with groups performing not only from the stage area, but from the aisles of the theater as well. Since we move from piece to piece with no applause, the time passes very quickly. People in the audience don't even realize that 90 minutes have flown by." While proceeds from the concerts benefit music students in the form of scholarships, Scholz said the department never loses sight that Glorious Sounds of the Season! is also a way of giving back to the Chico community. "The Music Department develops closer ties to the residents of Chico, and many locals look forward to this concert every year," he said. "Glorious Sounds of the Season! Really helps to put everyone in that holiday mood." Advance tickets, at $20 for all seats, are available at the University Box Office at 898-6333; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door.
