Flood Rocks Fayetteville by STEPHANIE CRIDER As space allows, Up & Coming Weekly enjoys hearing from local bands and sharing their stories with our readers. Recently we had a chance to hear from Flood. UCW: Who are your band members and what instruments do they play? Flood: Ken Krick sings lead vocals, Chris Roberge plays guitar and joins in with vocals. Our drummer is Dom Mancini, who also sings, Pappy is our bass player and Steve Cumbee plays lead guitar UCW: Give us a brief history lesson on the band. When and where did you get started? Flood: Chris and I (Ken) were jamming together for years. We went through sev- eral name and line up changes. Sometimes bad things lead to good things, and back to back tragedies brought our current rhythm section into the band. After the loss of long time drummer Steve Johns, we were introduced to current drummer Domenic Mancini. Another family loss left long time bassist and band co-founder Kenny Phinney unable to continue, and Gary “Pappy” Fisher stepped up to the plate. Corona Steve took an extended hiatus. After almost a year of inactivity, I received a call for an audition. After the audition I realized that the inactivity just wasn’t work- ing for me and I decided to get back into the music scene. As fate would have it, Pappy called just days later and said, “Let’s put the band back together.” I called Dom and he said, “Where?” I called Chris and he said, “ When?” The band began to rehearse again to prepare for shows, but it seemed like something was missing. In came lead guitar- ist Steve Cumbee. After years with the band Wasted Vision, Steve joined the ranks of Flood. With the line up complete, Flood is currently writing and rehearsing and looking forward to expanding throughout the Carolinas and beyond. UCW: How would you define your music? Flood: Flood’s music is high energy, hard driving, radio friendly rock and roll. It’s an eclectic mix of rock from the classics of the late ‘70’s to today. We as a band want to cater to our fans playing music that the older as well as the younger crowds know and want to hear when they go out to the bar scene looking to enjoy a night out with friends while listening to the music that they appreciate. It’s rock and roll with a kick! Flood is the band you want to come out to see whether you want to sit at the bar or a table or dance the night away listening to all your favorite classic and modern rock songs. We play songs you can sing along to cause you will know allmost every song we play. UCW: Who are your favorite bands/influences on your music? Flood: Classics like Led Zepplin and Jethro Tull to current rockers like 3 Doors Down and Nickelback. There is ‘80’s and ‘90’s metal influence along with the modern hard rock stuff that’s out now. We are influenced by all forms of music from Zepplin to Nickelback. We as a whole love that edgy sound and we have taken some classic tunes from bands like The Rolling Stones and play them with a 3 Doors Down feel. Pappy is a Kiss fan for life and isinfluenced by Shinedown, Johnny Cash, Kiss, Motley Crue, Godsmack, Alice Cooper, The Crash Test Dummies, Garth Brooks and Mudvayne. UCW: Do you write your own music and where does that inspiration come from? Flood: Ken writes most of the lyrics and has a pretty weird way of looking at things. Chris writes too, and goes with what he thinks sounds good. When Steve writes he starts slapping his guitar around and stays with it till he gets something that just sounds good. UCW: If you only had two words to describe your band what would they be? Flood: Ken - Kick Ass!; Chris - We Rock!; Pappy - Party Band!; Dom - Rock Solid! Come to our shows and you’ll know what I mean! UCW: What are your hopes/goals for the future of your band? Flood: Ken: We hope to continue to play shows in the local area and throughout the Carolinas. Our goal is to record our own original songs and see where the recording lead us. Dom: We just want to continue to write our own material and continue doing what we all as a band love to do.... That’s playing music that our fans enjoy. Steve: I hope to make a career with music Pappy: I just want to have fun playing live shows with my buds in Flood. I hope we can play more shows where I can bring my kids. Also, I am looking forward to recording our first cd.Chris: Hopefully doing what we love, rockin’ out and having fun! UCW: Where do you see the band five years, 10 years from now? Flood: I see Flood being a regional success throughout the eastern states. I can see us with three or four cds. I think we will still be rockin and having fun! UCW: Where can Fayetteville music lovers check you in the near future? Flood: Dec. 18 at Louie’s Sports Pub Find out more at www. floodrocksnc.com WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM STEPHANIE CRIDER, Staff Writer COMMENTS? 484-6200 ext. 222 or Stephanie@upandcomingweekly. com DECEMBER 15-21, 2010 UCW 25 CONNECTION Concert BBIG APPLE 5900 Yadkin Rd. • (910) 868-5559 bigapplefay.com Thurs.
