1B Sports Giants closing in on deal with Tim Hudson SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Giants were working Monday to finalize agreement on a $23 million, two-year contract with free agent right-hander Tim Hudson. San Francisco assistant general manager Bobby Evans said nothing had been completed but the sides were close. The deal, expected to be reached later Monday, would bring Hudson back to the Bay Area, where he pitched for the Oakland Athletics as a member of the ''Big Three'' with Mark Mulder and Barry Zito beginning in the late 1990s. The 38-year-old Hudson went 8-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 21 starts this season for Atlanta. His season was cut short by a broken right ankle that required surgery. The Braves earlier this month declined to make a qualifying offer to Hudson, who won 49 games during the previous three seasons. ''I'm pumped,'' Giants lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt said by text message. ''Great signing for us. Competitor and innings eater. Knows how to win!'' Hudson was hurt July 24 in New York when the Mets' Eric Young Jr. inadvertently stepped on the back of the pitcher's lower right leg while Hudson covered first base. San Francisco, which missed the playoffs this year after winning the World Series in 2010 and '12, is seeking another starter to join Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum in a rotation losing Zito and probably also freeagent righty Ryan Vogelsong. Cain and Bumgarner are signed long term, while Lincecum received a $35 million, two-year deal last month. Hudson spent his first six major league seasons with the A's, who selected him in the sixth round of the 1997 amateur draft out of Auburn. Oakland traded Hudson to the Braves in December 2004 and he pitched nine seasons in Atlanta. The three-time AllStar earned NL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2010 after he returned from elbow ligament replacement surgery to go 17-9 with a 2.83 ERA. He had surgery for a herniated disk in November 2011. The Giants had been eager to find an experienced starter to fill in the rotation. Zito just finished a $126 million, sevenyear contract and had his $18 million option declined for 2014. Vogelsong's $6.5 million option for 2014 was declined by the club. Hudson is 205-111 in a 15-year career and was coming off a $36 million, four-year contract. After snapping a career-worst 10-game winless streak with a 13-4 victory July 6 at Philadelphia, Hudson went 4-0 with a 3.10 ERA in his last four starts. Hudson will pitch to 2012 NL MVP and batting champion Buster Posey, who is signed through 2021. Right fielder Hunter Pence was given a $90 million, five-year contract before the season ended. O'Neal has bruised knee, groin strain OAKLAND (AP) — The Golden State Warriors say an MRI exam shows backup center Jermaine O'Neal has a bruised right knee and a strained right groin. O'Neal didn't travel with the team for Monday night's game at the Utah Jazz and is considered day to day. He was injured early in the fourth quarter of Golden State's 102-88 victory over the Jazz on Saturday night in Oakland when he slipped along the baseline. O'Neal is in his 18th season in the NBA. He has battled numerous knee injuries throughout his career, though the most serious have been to his left knee. Reserve center Ognjen Kuzmic will likely be counted on more in O'Neal's absence. The Warriors also could play power forwards David Lee and Marreese Speights at center. By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer ORLAND — Tyler Batchelder is back. The Orland High School quarterback returned in earnest Friday for the Northern Section CIF Division II football playoffs and led the No. 4 Trojans to an opening round victory over the fifth-seeded Corning Cardinals, 13-6 at Trojan Stadium. Batchelder, who had missed the better part of Orland's previous five games because of an injury, needed less than a minute to ease into things as he rushed for a 50-yard touchdown on the second play of the game to give his team a 7-0 lead. A banged up Orland squad (8-3) fell to the Cards, 27-13 on Oct. 11, but they would use their star quarterback and size to their advantage Friday, ultimately beating Corning at what it does best: run. We wanted to get back to doing our fundamentals, doing the simple things and trying to work as a team, Orland coach Mike McDonald said, adding, Batchelder back engineering that offense did great. The 5-foot-10 Batchelder finished the night with 102 yards rushing on 12 carries. Corning (7-4) started slow, and a fumble early in the second period that was recovered by Orland would prove costly. Starting at the Cards' 43-yard line, the Trojans needed just five plays to get back in the end zone as Jesse Gonzales ran in a 29-yard touchdown to give Orland a 13-0 lead with 9:33 left in the half. Trojan kicker Eric Anguiano was 1-for-2 on point after touchdown attempts. His miss sailed wide right. After another turnover on their subsequent possession, the Cards settled down late in the first half. Corning, starting on its five-yard line, put together a nine-play drive capped by an 11-yard rushing touchdown from its star running back, Chance Nelson. Nelson's number was called again for a two-point conversion attempt, and it seemed as if he had pushed and stretched his way to the goal after an official raised his arms, signaling a conversion, but it would be called back after a short conference. No good. Orland's 13-6 lead with 2:45 left to play in the first half would stand. The Cards' best chance to tie or take the lead came on their first possession of the third period as they drove to Orland's six-yard line on big plays from Nelson and sophomore Alex Davila. Nelson, who finished with 169 yards rushing on 20 carries, reached the end zone on a six-yard run, but the play was negated by an offensive holding call. Corning would ultimately turn the ball over on downs at the Trojans' 13yard line. All credit to (Orland) for going out and winning the game, Corning coach John Studer said. I didn't feel like we played very well. And sometimes that's indicative of the other team. They did things to force you to play poorly, but we haven't put the ball on the ground like this all year long. And those turnovers, that hurt us. To have a touchdown taken off of the board at that one point that we weren't able to recover from. For Orland, advancing in the playoffs feels fantastic, McDonald said. He also gave a nod to his defense, which he said did a great job. But there are still things to work on. The Trojans failed to score twice when they found themselves within Corning's 20-yard line. When we get in the red zone though, I'm going to be in trouble, McDonald said. Because my wife says, 'If you're in the red zone and you don't score it's the coach's fault.' So I got some work to do. The Trojans will visit No. 1 seed West Valley in a semifinal game Friday. --------Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com. McGloin threw three touchdown passes against Houston in his first career start as he led the Raiders to their first road victory of the season, earning himself serious consideration for a shot to take over the starting role from Terrelle Pryor. Coach Dennis Allen wasn't ready to announce a decision Monday about who would start this week against Tennessee because he wants to talk to Pryor to determine the status of his injured right knee. ''I'm not sure exactly where he is physically, but I will say this, with Matt's performance, he's earned the right to be in the discussion,'' Allen said. ''That's for sure.'' Tellingly, Allen would not commit to Pryor starting Sunday if he is healthy, saying the decision will be made on what's best for the team. ''Our job as coaches is to try to do the things that we feel like give us the best opportunity to win,'' he said. ''That's what those players in that locker room are looking for. Now, it's good to know that you have options. That's, obviously, a positive. I don't look at it as a tough situation. I look at it as a good situation.'' McGloin completed 18 AP photo Matt McGloin throws a pass Sunday in Houston. of 32 passes for 197 yards, the three touchdowns and no interceptions in one of the best debut starts of any rookie, much less an undrafted one. McGloin became the first Raider in four years to throw at least three touchdowns and no interceptions in a game and joined former Raider Todd Marinovich as the only rookies since the 1970 merger to do that in their first career start. That helped lead the Raiders (4-6) to a 28-23 win that put them back into the thick of the race for the final AFC playoff spot. Oakland is one of seven teams in the AFC with four wins. Miami and the New York Jets are tied at 5-5 for the sixth and final playoff spot with six games to play. ''I thought he had great command of the huddle,'' Allen said. ''I thought his presence on the field was outstanding. I thought he did a great job communicating with the sideline. When you watch him in the passing game, there weren't a lot of unsettledness. He was calm in the pocket. He worked through his progression. He threw the ball with timing and accuracy. In particular, for the first time out and the first time starting, I thought he handled himself very well.'' The performance was a stark contrast to the way Pryor had played in recent weeks. Since a promising start to the season, Pryor struggled in recent weeks before finally being forced to sit because of a sprained MCL in his right knee. Since the start of Week 6, Pryor has completed 61 of 120 passes for 714 yards with one touchdown and eight interceptions. Pryor is last in the NFL in that span in completion percentage (50.8) and passer rating (44.2) and is tied for the most interceptions. Pryor has gone 112 straight passes since throwing a touchdown pass. McGloin threw one to Denarius Moore on his first pass of the game to help set the tone for the win. McGloin got rid of the ball much faster than Pryor, taking pressure off a struggling offensive line, and even had more success on deep balls. He completed three of his five passes that went beyond 21 yards in the air, compared to just one for Pryor on six tries in the past four games. ''In my eyes, he really played flawless,'' safety Charles Woodson said after the game. ''He played flawless football, especially for this being his first start in the National Football League. He put the ball in there. He had some guys early on in the game that had some drops, but he put it right on the numbers and those are catches the guys have to make for him. He played well all day long and made some huge throws for us.'' NOTES: WRs Andre Holmes and Moore both are getting MRIs after injuring their shoulders in the game. RG Mike Brisiel had an MRI on his injured knee that came back negative. ... DE Jason Hunter (foot) and Daniel Muir (knee) also had MRIs that Allen did not have results on.
