Estes (USN) (Ret) formerly of Lillian, Alabama and currently of Salzburg, Austria crossed the bar on October 12, 2013 in his beloved town of Salzburg surrounded by great friends. Bill was an avid traveler, an experienced aviator and enthusiastic conversationalist whose good humor and charm will be missed by many. Bill lived most of his retired life in the Lillian community, having served many years in the Navy at Naval Air Base Pensacola. It is there along with his wife Sharon that he raised his two sons, Jeffrey and Scott (Vincent). Bill was blessed to live a life on the water on Soldiers Creek and established many longstanding friendships within the community. However, it was Bill's love of adventure and travel that took him overseas to explore various countries and cultures, making friends and memories along the way. During his time in Austria, Bill remained firmly committed to his love of aviation, arts, military history and the outdoors. He was fortunate to be accepted into the community of honored veterans and aviators as one of their own and lived out the remainder of his days in good company with great friends. Bill leaves behind his beloved sons, Jeffrey L. Estes (Brandi) and Vincent Scott Estes (Shannon), his grandsons Joshua and Cody, and granddaughter Molly, as well as his sister Judy and his extended family members. He was honored to have built a loving family with his former wife Sharon, and enjoyed many visits over the years with his children and grandchildren. Andrew Giambroni met his wife, Beverly, who attended the celebration, on a blind date in Red Bluff. They were married seven months later in 1958. Andrew Giambroni also was an author, his most significant work being "Odor of War." "I don't have the definition here in front of me today of what life is, or what life is all about," Jess Giambroni said. "But literally, with all of you here today, on behalf of my father and my entire family, right here right now if this literally isn't what life is all about, then I don't know what is." CHP: Hotshot firefighter runs over colleague CAMPTONVILLE (AP) — A wildfire firefighter lying in a road was run over and killed by a colleague in a sparely populated stretch of Northern California in a bizarre early morning traffic incident involving alcohol, authorities said Monday. California Highway Patrol investigators said a driver in Yuba County early Saturday spotted a man, Michael Patrick Kelly, 32, lying in the road about 3 miles from Camptonville, Calif., which is about 80 miles north of Sacramento. The unidentified driver flashed his high-beams in a failed attempt to warn an approaching vehicle that it was on a collision course with the man in the road. The small car with six passengers, driven by Andrew Gruenberg, 26, struck Kelly, who was pronounced dead at the scene with head and torso injuries, the CHP said. After hitting Kelly, Gruenberg traveled another 2 miles to his destination, telling investigators later that he believed he ran over an animal. A passenger called 911 and reported the collision and a ''hazard in the roadway.'' After arriving at his destination, two of Kelly's passengers got into another car and drove back to the accident site, where they encountered emergency crews. ''Alcohol appears to be a factor in the collision,'' CHP officer Greg Tassone. Tassone declined to release any further details, saying the investigation is still active. He did not say who authorities think was drinking. The U.S. Forest Service said Kelly was a full-time employee and squad boss for the Tahoe Hotshots Crew, which is based in Camptonville. Gruenberg is a member of the same crew. Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. While running the man dumped a plastic bag containing about 14 grams of methamphetamine and was not positively identified before officers lost sight of him. As officers searched a nearby alley they discovered 18-year-old Jared Wilson, who was hiding in a dark alcove. Wilson had heard the police in the area and tried to go noticed even though he had nothing to do with the previous incidents. He was detained and later arrested for possession of narcotics paraphernalia and brass knuckles. His bail was $18,000. A resident reported to a California Highway Patrol officer, who was assisting in the case, that they had However according to the press release, both boys admitted to being associated with members from the gangs. One of the boys received a minor injury as seen a man fitting the general description of the man being sought in the alley at a residence on the 900 block of Hickory Street. A Red Bluff police officer responded to the location and saw a man fitting the description. That man along with a woman walked out of the residence and got into a vehicle to leave. When the police officer drove up and attempted to contact the man he ran from the vehicle. Another foot pursuit ensued and the man was apprehended. He was uncooperative and refused to provide his name to the police. He was transported to Tehama County Jail where he was eventually identified as 43-year-old Sean James Randel. Randel was booked for misdemeanor resisting arrest and a series of outstanding warrants including felony possession of a controlled 5A a result of the physical altercation. His bail was $178,000. "It is suspected he was the other suspect in the stolen Honda, but officers could not be sure since they never saw his face in the initial foot pursuit," the press release said. Boudreau's bail was $20,000. At this time there is still one outstanding suspect related to the theft of the white Nissan and police are still investigating the case. The white Nissan has not been found. Anyone with information is asked to call the Red Bluff Police Department at 527-3131. (AP) — A U.S. Navy sailor from California and his high school sweetheart are so excited to get married, they're going to tie the knot as soon as his plane lands at a Nevada airport. The wedding is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. Monday at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. That's just minutes after seaman Dylan Ruffer is scheduled to arrive after an 11month deployment off the coast of war-torn Syria. Madison Meinhardt of Chester, Calif., contacted the airport three weeks ago because her fiance told her he wants to get married the minute he sees her. Northern California prison guard hospitalized SACRAMENTO (AP) — A correctional officer is hospitalized in fair condition after he was slashed in the head and neck with an inmate-made weapon at a Northern California state prison. Lt. Bryan Donahoo at the California State Prison in Sacramento says a maximum-security inmate repeatedly slashed the 40-year-old officer about 8 a.m. Monday using a piece of broken glass from a television. Donahoo says the 15-year veteran officer needs surgery to repair a tendon in his arm and cosmetic surgery for his ear. He was also cut several times on the neck. Inmate Alberto Cortez is being held in the attack. The 22-year-old is serving a life sentence for attempted firstdegree murder. Donahoo says it is unclear what triggered the assault at the prison, which is 25 miles east of the state capital. Calif. man says Google Maps image shows slain son RICHMOND (AP) — A San Francisco Bay Area man wants Google Maps to remove an aerial image that shows the body of his 14-year-old son, who was shot and killed in 2009. Richard Barrea told KTVU-TV over the weekend that he became aware of the image of his son Kevin earlier in the week. He said he wants Google Inc. to take down the image out of respect for his son, but it wasn't clear whether he had asked Google directly to take it down. ''When I see this image, that's still like that happened yesterday,'' Barrera told the news station Sunday. ''And that brings me back to a lot of memories.'' The image shows what appears to be a body on the ground near a rail line with several other people, presumably investigators, and what looks like a police car nearby. It was visible on Google's website Monday. Kevin's body was found on a path near railroad tracks that separate North Richmond from San Pablo on Aug. 15, 2009. His slaying remains unsolved. Police believe Kevin was killed in the same spot the night before his body was found, said Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov. They have not established a motive for the slaying or identified any suspects. An email to Google from The Associated Press was not immediately returned. The company says most of its overhead images are about one to three years old, although it tries to update them regularly. Google Maps also provides a street view function that allows people to tour areas as someone passing through them would. Street View displays images that have been gathered by Google using cameras mounted on cars, tricycles and even snowmobiles. Some of the images have raised privacy concerns, though Google says its technology automatically blurs license plates and people's faces. It also allows users to report concerns about the images. There is, however, no similar reporting feature for overhead imagery, according to Google. Veterans housed together in San Diego County jail VISTA (AP) — A cellblock painted red, white and blue has been reserved for U.S. military veterans at the San Diego County Jail in Vista, as part of a new program initiated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The mission of the Veterans Moving Forward program is to encourage camaraderie and keep veterans from returning to jail by helping them gain job skills, find housing and undergo treatment for mental illness, the U-T San Diego reported for a story Saturday. ''The ultimate goal is transitioning them back to the community,'' Sheriff Bill Gore said. The Eldorado Hotel-Casino is donating the wedding cake, limousine and honeymoon suite for the couple, who met at Chester High School. The Blue Star Moms and Patriot Guard veterans group plan to help airport officials make it a special ceremony.
