Saturday, December 11, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship The Advent adventure — Part 2 Gospel The message of John the Baptist – his formula for preparing for the com- ing of Christ – is that we bear fruit consistent with repen- tance. In fact, the first four verses of Mark’s Gospel model the for- mula. The first verse simply states that what follows – the call to repent – is the beginning of the Good News of Jesus – not a run-up or a pre-requisite to receiving it, but the Good News itself. Verses two and three reit- erate Isaiah’s image of a voice crying out in the desert to pave the high- way on which the King Christ is to arrive. In those days when a king returned victorious from war the people paved a new high- way so that he could arrive in his city on new ground made possible by his victory and suitably adorned to give him his proper glory. The fourth verse simply casts John in the role of highway crew foreman – he comes preaching a baptism of repentance which amounts to turning away from the life we have cre- ated and toward the one that God creates. This cul- ture or lifestyle of repen- tance is the paving God the Son desires for the suitable adornment of His victory highway. James Wilson GodTalk rent events to a glimpse of what that might look like? Jesus Himself (Matt. 11:2-6) describes the Kingdom as a place in which the dead are raised and the lepers cured, the blind and deaf restored, and the poor filled with the good news of God’s infinite love for them. We live in such a season right now, albeit still in the infancy of its unfolding. There have been more recorded mira- cles – of all kinds – in the past half century than in all previous cen- turies combined. People are coming to the Lord in equally dramatic num- bers; the size of the Body of Christ has literally dou- bled in the last 50 years. Have the forces of hunger, disease, and oppression been eliminated from our world? Certainly not, but Jesus said He came to set the captives free in the acceptable year of the Lord and that process has surely gotten underway on our watch. God’s love is coming our way like a runaway freight train. But there is another A wise man once said that God’s love and God’s justice collided on the Cross – and John the Bap- tist’s ministry certainly embodies this word. But if we are living in a John the Baptist season that prepares us for the return of the King then it must be that God’s love and justice will collide once again – this time as the Son meets us in the sky. Can we see through cur- runaway freight on the same track and on a colli- sion course with the first one. Those forces of hunger, disease and oppression are actually escalating in our world. Jesus told us to be on the lookout for three signs that the endtimes are upon us. The first is wars and rumors of wars – and though we fight no declared war on terror there is warfare in every nation of the world and it is a war over whose god is the Lord God, accord- ing to those who attack our civilization. Chris- tians all over the world – and Jews – are encounter- ing the hatred Jesus pre- dicted from all sides against all of His; even the US Secretary of Homeland Security says that cars bearing Christ- ian bumper stickers may be carrying terrorists. Finally we surely live in a time when men call evil good and good evil – the abomination that causes desolation in Jesus’ par- lance – when government healthcare compels tax- payers to fund abortions and taxpayers actually vote (in California) to spend billions on the proven bankruptcy – morally and pragmatical- ly – of embryonic stem cell research. According to scripture we have brought this on ourselves – and the Body must be featured in the indictment – and so we can say that God’s justice is going to explode in our midst. What do we do as we draw near to the celebra- tion of the First Coming? We can fight this war – using only the weapons God Himself has sup- plied. They are blessing (Rom. 12:14) those we think enemies; forgiving (John 20:19-23) as we have been forgiven; and sharing His Supper (Luke 24:13-35) in whatever manner our traditions have devised. Arming ourselves with these weapons we can march out into a world that is hungry and thirsty for blessing, forgiveness, and the bread of life. We can proclaim the year of special favor and give thanks for the opportuni- ty to do it. In this way we embody the spirit of the Baptist in this season of the Spirit of the Living God. James A. The Crist Family will be in concert at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 at First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St., in Red Bluff. Their blend of voices, great songs, high energy and incredible testimony is second to none. In just their 3rd year, they were invited to sing on Main Stage at the National Quartet Conven- tion and have graced the stage at nearly every major event in gospel music. They have recorded numerous CDs, a DVD and have had amazing chart success with every song released on the radio.
