4A – Daily News – Saturday, December 11, 2010 Agriculture & farm Small Farm Conference The organizers of the 24th California Small Farm Con- ference at the San Jose DoubleTree Hotel, March 6 to 8, 2011, are committed to offering a robust scholarship pro- gram in three categories: farmers, farmers’ market man- agers and college age students. About 100 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of limited income. They include meals, registration, workshops and the Sun- day evening Wine and Food Tasting. Lodging is offered depending upon the distance traveled from San Jose. The Sunday Field Courses are offered at a discounted rate of $20 to scholarship recipients. Applications can be downloaded from www.california- farmconference.com or call John Earle at the USDA Natur- al Resources Conservation Service, 527-2667 extension 101, to request an application in person, by mail or fax. Earle is serving as a scholarship adviser and is available to assist with the application process. Applications must be received or postmarked by Jan. 5, 2011. Recipients will be notified by the end of January 2011. Translation in Spanish, Hmong and Chinese will be provided. Scholarship advisers are available statewide to assist in completing the applications. A list may be found on the website. College of Ag alumni events California State University, Chico College of Agri- culture invites all alumni and friends to attend two upcoming alumni events. The College of Agriculture will host the 11th annu- al Alumni Reunion during the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale on Jan. 28 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tehama District Fairground Cafeteria in Red Bluff. The college will also host the 9th annual Alumni Breakfast at the Colusa Farm Show on Feb. 2 at 7 a.m. in Saint Bernadette’s Hall, 745 Ware St. Colusa. The Alumni Reunion during the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale will include a live and silent auc- tion to benefit alumni scholarships for College of Agriculture students, as well as academic programs. There will also be a no-host bar and refreshments, including grilled sausage from the CSU, Chico Meats Laboratory. There is no cost for admission to the reunion. Bill and Kay Burrows, Burrows Ranch on Colyear Springs Road, have donated a wild pig hunt on their ranch. They are listed in the California Hog Hunter. Each year since 1987 a day of envi- ronmental presentations and workshops has been hosted at Burrows Ranch west of Red Bluff. Closer to home Tyler Martinez and the JP Ranch Rodeo Committee have donated 10 full passes to the 16th annual Jim Owens Memorial Ranch Rodeo, Jan. 21-22, 2011 at the Pauline Davis Pavil- lion on the Tehama Dis- trict Fairground. It is always a fun event being close to the action as the 26 teams compete in herd counting, calf brand- ing, ranch sorting, ranch horse, ranch doctoring, calf roping and bronc rid- ing. Each night there is music and party following the ranch rodeo. Our neighbor John Gumm of Gumm’s Optical Shoppe on Main Street has donated sunglasses valued at $109 to the scholarship auction. Once again there will be wine tasting by local wineries before the dinner, and there will be sampling of dif- ferent olive oils from Lucero Olive Oil and Pacific Sun Olive Oil.
