Jingle Belle Special highlights singer’s new album By Dee Underwood TV Media may soon be joined by the chart-climbing hit “Oh San- ta!” by Mariah Carey. On Monday, Dec. 13, the T ABC Christmas special “Mari- ah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” will feature songs from both of the diva’s holiday al- bums. Carey’s mother, Patricia, will join her daughter on stage for a rendition of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” in which Patricia leads the chorus. ”Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” follows the release of her second Christ- mas album, “Merry Christmas II You,” which was released at the beginning of November. It is her 13th album re- lease since she came into the spotlight in 1990. She has since topped the Billboard charts 18 times and was the first solo artist to have her first five singles hit No. 1. In 2008, Car- ey broke Elvis’s re- cord for the most No. 1 hits by a solo artist, and she is still the top-selling female artist in history. Raised in a devout Christian family, Carey has always said that Christmas is her favorite time of We Pay $$$ For Kids Stuff! Children’s Clothing - Newborn to youth size 16 Furniture and Equipment Toys, Books and More! Payment on the spot for all items accepted No appointment Necessary Once Upon a Child 1 x 3” WalMart Plaza on US 33W (behind Steak ‘n Shake) Goshen • 574-830-5332 Open M-F 10-8 • Sat. 10-6 • Sun. 12-5 5936 Grape Road (Indian Ridge near Hacienda) Mishawaka • 574-247-1099 he ranks of classic Christ- mas songs such as “Frosty” and “Rudolph” the year, and that as a very re- ligious person, she lights up whenever she sees a Christ- mas tree or hears a carol. Her single “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has broken records almost every year since its release in 1994. It is the most downloaded Christ- mas ringtone and is the only holiday song ever to go multi- platinum. Her first Christmas album, “Merry Christmas,” is among the best-selling Christ- mas collections of all time, surpassed only by ones from Kenny G and Celine Dion. She also per- formed a ver- sion of “Where Are You Christmas?” for the soundtrack of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” starring Jim Carrey. Her profile always seems to rise around Christmas, and this year is no exception. In addition to her special, Carey performed at Rockefeller Cen- ter in New York City when its famous Christmas tree was lit, A&E aired a biography special on Nov. 24, and she did a live interview on Radio Disney and BBC Radio on Nov. 30. She will also be performing in the Christmas Day parade at Walt Disney World in California. The new episode of “Ex- treme Makeover: Home Edi- tion” features Carey helping a family that is dealing with the sudden loss of their mother. A budding football star decided to return home from college to help raise his nieces and nephews, so Carey and the “Makeover” team help them get back on their feet. Just a few days after her Mariah Carey on stage in “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” own special airs, Carey will be among the many stars to ap- pear on TNT’s special “Christ- mas in Washington,” airing Friday night. Ellen DeGeneres will host the festivities as the crowd is entertained by Miranda Cosgrove, Annie Len- nox and Maxwell. Matthew Morrison, star of the hit Fox series “Glee,” will sing and dance for the audience, which will include Washington’s most famous family, the Obamas. It also serves as the set of NBC’s hit competi- tion series “America’s Got Tal- ent,” hosted by Carey’s hus- band, Nick Cannon. The two wed in 2008, and she is cur- rently pregnant and due in spring 2011. Carey has also made her mark as an actress, appearing in several films. She starred as the battered wife of a police officer in “Tennessee” (2008), and in 2009 she starred as a social worker in the award- winning “Precious,” alongside other singers Mo’Nique and Lenny Kravitz. “Precious” earned six Oscar nominations, and Carey herself won a couple of film festival awards for her role. Carey fought hard for the success of “Tennessee” and “Precious” after her own film, “Glitter,” was a flop. The film, a semi-autobiographical film in which she starred, cost $22 million to produce but only brought in $5 million at the box office. It was even nomi- nated for six Golden Raspberry awards -- Carey took home the worst-actress statue. In the wake of its failure, as well as declining record sales, Carey was bought out of her contract with Virgin Records and was left to re-establish her reputation. The film had an ac- companying soundtrack that also sold poorly, and in fact, “Glitter” was the only one of her albums that did not go platinum. Carey attributes the failure to the attacks on the World Trade Center, which hap- pened on the same day as the album’s release. Critics, how- ever, blamed Carey herself and called it “the Chernobyl of pop music.” After the disaster that was “Glitter,” Carey was able to re- build herself and release five more albums that have all been great successes. Her 2005 release “The Emancipation of Mimi” won three Grammy awards and included two No. 1 singles. She says her “emanci- pation” came after she and manager/husband Tommy Mottola split up and Carey re- gained full creative control. 2 The Goshen News • Viewer’s Choice • Saturday, December 11, 2010 - Friday, December 17, 2010 Laughs Late The Tonight Show: Jay Leno Michelle Obama is expected to announce a plan to put 5,000 salad bars in public schools. They expect as many as three students to use them. North Korea attacked South Korea by brazenly firing mortars into their country. Apparently what happened was Kim Jong Il got angry over the fact that Bristol Palin made it to the finals of “Dancing With the Stars.” In the latest Harry Potter film, Harry loses his friends, has to battle overwhelming evil forces and hides in exotic foreign places to avoid public scrutiny. ... I’m sorry, that’s President Obama. The Late Show: David Letterman There’s a new list of America’s most dangerous cities -- New York City is No. 269. I’ve never been so humiliated in my life. I blame this on Mayor Bloomberg and his crackdown on murder -- thanks a lot. Forty million people are traveling on Thanksgiving. And those are just the Democrats leaving Washington! Terrible traffic here. You can’t get anywhere. The city is like Dick Cheney: all the arteries are clogged. Live: Jimmy Kimmel Sarah Palin must be glad that “Dancing With the Stars” is over. It was a major distraction -- she was only able to release three books this month. Sarah Palin’s book “America by Heart” came out today, just in time for awkward holiday gift exchanges.
