Colusa clobbers Warriors SOCCER Colusa 5 Mercy 1 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Colusa overcame an opening goal by Mercy, to thrash the Warriors 5- 1, Thursday, in a game called early due to dark- ness. Games are official once the second half starts. Because stadium lights were not turned on at Spartan Stadium, offi- cials called the game after 60 minutes when they were losing sight of the ball. Despite scoring the game’s first goal, it didn’t appear as if a Mercy comeback was in the works anyway. Jose Rosales put Mercy up 1-0 in the eighth minute when he was sprung open on a nice through ball by Liam Dobson. Two minutes later Colusa countered when a corner kick landed in the box and was knocked past a lifeless Warriors’ defense. Colusa got what would prove to be the game-winner in the 18th minute when Mercy’s keeper Alejandro Guer- rero was beat by a Colusa attacker as he tried to Daily News photo by Rich Greene claim a ball near the top of the penalty box. Guerrero redeemed himself with some clutch saves to close out the first half to keep the score 2- 1. Mercy ‘s Liam Dobson strikes a ball,Thursday, against Colusa. harm’s way. Colusa came back three minutes later and scored off of another cor- ner kick when a pair of attackers were left unmarked in front of the Mercy goal. But just three minutes into the second half Colusa struck again when they lifted a shot over Guerrero’s head. In the 54th minute, Colusa added a fifth goal, again off of a corner kick that wasn’t cleared by the Mercy defense out of Despite the 5-1 score- line, it was a marked improvement over Mercy’s 16-1 loss, Tues- day over defending sec- tion champion Hamilton. Mercy (0-2) is sched- uled to travel to Los Molinos on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Lady Cardinals improved to 4-1 on the season. “We are still working to find our way offensively, but right now we are on the back of Brittney Garrett as she continues to carry us,” Eller said. Los Molinos 40 Paradise Adventist Academy 22 The Lady Bulldogs won their opening game of the season 40-22 at Paradise Adventist Academy. Los Molinos outscored their hosts 11-2 in the second quarter. Manning throws for 319, Indianapolis beats Titans Indianapolis 30 Tennessee 28 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Peyton Manning threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns, and the Indianapolis Colts snapped their three-game skid by beating the Tennessee Titans 30-28 on Thursday night to stay just a half-game back in the AFC South. Manning broke out of the worst slump of his career with a crisp performance against a defense that now hasn’t intercepted a pass in 14 straight quarters. The Colts (7-6) haven’t lost four straight since 2001 when their five-game slide prompted Jim Mora’s famous rant about the playoffs Tennessee (5-8) now has lost six straight and dropped 2 1/2 games behind Jacksonville (7-5) in the AFC South with three to play. The Titans can blame themselves for mistakes that led to each of the Colts’ first three touchdowns.
