Friday, November 15, 2013 – Daily News 3A CattleWomen honor two members This Tehama County CattleWomen broke with tradition and honored two members Nov. 9 instead of one as CowBelle of the Year at their annual luncheon, fashion show and boutique at Carino's at Rolling Hills Casino in Corning. Betty Peek from Cottowood and Jeanne Smith of Corning and were the honorees. The CowBelle of the Year is elected annually by CattleWomen members who have been similary honored in the past. This year the vote ended in a tie. The honor goes to CattleWomen who have donated extraordinary time and effort to the organization's events and goals. Smith and Peek join a list of forty seven outstanding CattleWomen members who have earned the respect and admiration of their fellow CattleWomen. Betty Peek was introduced by Joan Hemsted. Peek was born at Fourth Crossing in Calavares County. She was raised on a 500 acre working ranch that had been in the family since 1858. She still runs cattle on that ranch, using a brand that was registered in 1862. Betty met and married Ellington Peek in 1950. They settled in Tehama County in 1959 and raised four children. In 1966 Betty and Ellington started Shasta Livestock Auction Yard in Cottonwood. Betty supplied clothing from the store for models for CattleWomen fashion shows for many years and was a sponsor for CattleWoman and Cattlemen events. She supported the youth of many counties with purchases at Junior Livestock Auctions. She donated many buckles and clothing for events such as Beef Princess and Beef Ambassador. Betty has been a member of the Tehama County CattleWomen for 45 years. Jeanne Smith was introduced by Cathy Tobin. Jeanne's family has a long cattle ranching history. She is the granddaughter of Frances McDowell who was the second president of the Tehama County Cattlewomen in 1954. She and her husband Richard run a small herd of registered Black Angus cattle and a commercial herd. They raised their 2 sons on the family ranch. Jeanne's community involvement, began at the age of 9 when she won a Keep California Green poster contest. She is a member of the Lions Club, Children's Home Society, American Angus Association and was a 4-H leader. She serves as a director, has helped with the phone tree, the Round Up parade, winter dinner, poetry contest, boot raffle, Beef 'n Brew, and the trail ride. Jeanne attended Butte Community College where she majored in horticulture. She used her gardening expertise and crafting talent to grow pumpkins and gourds which she arranged for the décor at the luncheon and fashion show. Harvest Moon was the theme of the CattleWomen's 54th annual beef luncheon. Serving as chairpersons for the event was Jeannie Garton. Tickets were handled by Shelley Macdonald and Linda Borror. Fashion show and model coordinators were Linda McCay and Garton. Fall decorations were created by Garton and Jeannie Smith. Pem Lester set up the Cowboy Pantry, Laurel Walker organized the boutique vendors and Anne Read and Linda Walker were in charge of the publicity. Program graphics were created by Michelle Hickok and Joyce Bundy handled program information and the sponsors. Master of Ceremonies for the Fashion show was Daily News Publisher Greg Stevens. Fashions were modeled from the Loft, Crossroads, Plum Crazy, Wink and 3 Generations, all of Red Bluff. Fashions from Sassy and Classy from Chico, Wheeler West Cowgirl Boutique of Corning and Pendelton from Anderson were also modeled. Modeling were Tehama County Beef Ambassadors Taylor Collins and Danielle Mueller. Joining them were Vicki Mahoney, Stephanie McKenzie, Niki Wolter, Linda Walker, Laurel Walker, Kiley King, Tyler King, Donna Ross, Cheryl Forbes, Asta Johnson, Tiffany O'Neil, Ann Butler, Vicky Virgen, Candace Zappetini, Jolene Kemen and Nicole Suave.
