2A – Daily News – Wednesday, December 8, 2010 Community people&events Red Bluff Garden Club to hold Christmas Boutique Spencer Dodero You Matter Social media is an interesting thing. I remember my kids having a MySpace, but really didn’t pay much attention to it. I started with the Facebook generation which ini- tially was coined ‘MySpace for moms’, but now has all generations friending one another and posting away everything from the profound to the trivial. There are elements of Facebook that are very juvenile and cliquish, but there are also aspects that are very inspiring and heart- warming. Spencer Dodero is a local high schooler who, if you ask me, is des- tined for fame as a member of Sat- urday Night Live. She is one of the funniest off-the-cuff wits you will ever meet. She has an uncanny abil- ity to find the humor in any situation and her delivery is nothing short of Carol Burnett, but that is not why she matters. This year’s boutique will be held from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. Dec.9-11 in the Pine and Rio streets Victorian in Red Bluff. Last week, Spencer posted a request on her Facebook wall letting people know that if they clicked ‘like’ on her post, she would recip- rocate with why she likes them. At last count thirty-eight people had clicked ‘like’ and were rewarded with sentiments that were so amaz- ingly heart-felt I wanted to cry. She could have been sarcastic, flippant or coy, but she was genuine, loving and unique to each and every person who asked to be loved. Spencer took the time to individualize her responses and you could tell that she had a genuine interest in each person she responded to. All that people really want in this world is to feel loved and accepted. Spencer made certain that anyone who cared to know, found out that she loved them and she told them their unique qualities that made them special. What a gift. What a young woman and what a pleasure to know that children are growing up with such big hearts. them exactly why they matter to you. It is the most affordable gift I can imagine this season and will probably make a bigger impact than most other gifts. Faydra Rector Life Coach It took nothing but time for Spencer to make thirty-eight people know how much they mat- tered to her. If she had never offered to tell them, they may never have known what specifically she thought was amazing about them. It was fun to watch her ‘friends’ begin to ask the same question on their Facebook pages too. Spencer started a cyber love train that is going full- steam ahead. You don’t need Facebook to model Spencer’s behavior. You can write a small note to each person on your Christmas card list and tell Spencer Dodero, you matter because you truly understand that all peo- ple want os to feel loved and accepted. You are a role model, a leader, and one heck of a funny young woman. I have no doubt that you will be successful in all that you do because you have found that you get more flies with honey than vinegar. Be like Spencer, be thoughtful, willing to share your appreciation with others and will- ing to make other people feel as best about themselves as they can.
