Motorcycle Books That Are for Everyone by JIM JONES Looking for a stocking stuffer for your biker friends or family? Try these books out. Shop Class as Soulcraft, An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford. This book will give you a fresh look at today’s world. If you enjoyed the philosophical approach to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mechanics by Robert M. Pirsig you will enjoy this book as well. This book is not just for the motorcyclist but should be mandatory reading for every educator, businessman and parent who is thinking about paying for their kids’ education. This book is incredibly insightful in this chang- ing world. The book addresses modern technology, labor, out- sourcing and a no kidding look at pros and cons of college. Although the title says this is an inquiry of work, to me it is a book about doing what you love and developing the skills it takes to get to a point where a craftsman masters his or her trade. I enjoyed this book so much I’ve bought over 10 copies to give my friends who are riders and teachers. Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America’s Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang by William Queen. This is the true story of Agent Queen (a.k.a. Billy St. John) who infiltrates the out- law motorcycle club called the Mongols. Queen, a North Carolina native and former Special Forces soldier who joins the ATF opens the door into deep undercover world of law enforcement. Agent Queen’s story takes him from a routine assignment and ends with him becoming a top ranking official in one of America’s most feared motorcycle clubs, the Mongols. His story takes you deep inside the outlaw world of what is called the “one percenters” of the motorcycle world. During the span of his investigation he worked with insur- ance companies to determine how to identify stolen motorcycles and parts and discovered the money laundering business of drugs and stolen goods. During his investigation he had to take drugs, witness violent attacks and often had to break the law to protect himself from harm’s way. This book exposes you to the hardships, emotions, isolation and sense of justice that is faced by an undercover officer. The book also reveals the brotherhood of a motorcycle club and the painful choice of having to arrest and testify against people who Agent Queen befriended throughout the investigation. Convictions included everything from money laundering, drug trafficking, theft to murder. His investigation included more than 700 law enforcement agents, multiple law enforcement agencies and secured the convictions of 50 bikers. Ghost Rider: Travels On the Healing Road by Neil Peart documents his travels after losing his family. Pert is known for his work as the drummer and lyricist for the rock group Rush. Within a nine month period Pert lost his 19-year old daughter in an automobile accident and then his wife to cancer. Left with nothing he packed his bike and just rode off. Looking for answers and distance Pert rode to forget the pain but discovers himself, grieving, heal- ing, humanity and the love for motorcycling. Fifty-five thousand miles later Pert covered most of North America, Mexico and Belize. This book shares some insightful tips about riding, highways, towns and history. Since this book, Pert has become a much published author and often interviewed person within the motorcycle world.
