The Advent adventure — Part 1 Many traditional denominations think of the four weeks before Christ- mas as a season called Advent. The word refers to a launching or a coming forth and Jesus Christ is the obvious object – but it is His second coming that is forth-told in Advent. The season prepares us for the celebration of His birth by anticipating the celebration of His final glory. John the Baptist is the prophet who identifies the Christ – the Son of God – in the scriptures. John is the focal point of many of the Bible passages we associate with Advent. We can believe that as John once announced the first coming so – in some sense – will he announce the second as well. Contemporary prophetic voices have said that we now live in a season of John’s ministry – although no one can reasonably claim a clue as to when the King will appear in the sky as He promised. But if we are in a John the Baptist season – if the Body of Christ is called to embody the ministry of the Baptist – then a quality observance of Advent becomes especially poignant and at the same time crucial. Who is John and what should we know and emulate about him? He certainly called upon the Church to repent – to turn away from the structures and habits they had erected as a way of reaching out to God and toward the reality that God reaches the humble – and them alone – on His own initiative. God has even released a prophetic statement in this season. He says, "I have produced a great harvest for you and you have gathered it into barns – and there it remains. I will tear down the barns and release the harvest." This word is not – as some might think – a word of threat or belliger- ence. But it is the Father’s guarantee Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, 901 South St. Corning, presents Frank and MaryJane Kendrick Sunday at the 6 p.m. ser- vice. The Kendricks were appointed as Assemblies of God missionaries in 1985. The Kendricks started their missions career in Honduras where they plant- ed churches, started a Bible school and did general mis- sionary work. In 1995, they moved to Uruguay where that He will do whatever it takes to set His people free – even at the risk of removing the buffers they have them- selves set between. It is not the equiv- alent of, "Good morning, you brood of vipers," but it is His call to "Bear fruit that befits repen- tance," as He says in effect in Mark 1:1-4. The Baptist does more than call for repentance; he models it in three distinct ways. The first is that he treats his cousin – after the flesh – as family. When Jesus approaches him and asks for baptism – the baptism of repentance – John recognizes Him as the Son and Messiah and tries to avoid an uncom- fortable situation. But when Jesus asks that it be done to satisfy all righteousness John defers to Him because He is family. When we are called to treat Jesus as He treats us – to worship and adore Him without reservation or con- cern about the time or the place – we are simply called to treat Him as fam- ily and to acknowledge Him at all times as He acknowledges us. The second thing John does is to recognize Messiah – not just in the person of Jesus, but in the faces of those he meets in the Name of Jesus. He exhorts his listeners to do as he does – to treat all others as though they were better and more important than we are. We live in a culture that exalts honor and respect – for our- selves – and doles it out to others in a pat on the back or a fist bump – maybe even a hug. But John calls on us to see what our brother or sister really needs and to provide it as God provides for us. That means really listening to each other and treating each other with MaryJane was very active teaching in the Bible school, and Frank served as the director of the missions department. They pastored Vida Abundante church in the city of Punta del Este. This congregation had gone through some difficult times. The national church asked the Kendricks to take the church and in more than 6 years they were able to get it back on its feet with an average attendance of more pragmatic grace – whether the hunger is for food, for time spent, or for opportunity to minister their own gifts. James Wilson GodTalk The third thing John does is to decrease as Messiah increases. The more we get out of His way the more Jesus our Lord manifests the signs of His presence through us. He even said that we would do greater things than He has done when we operate in His Name. But that concept presupposes the trans- parency of an ambassador who has no will of His own but only a commit- ment to whatever His gov- erning authority wills. When we seek first God and His Kingdom then all things – including the power to do His work – are given to us. If John is "Elijah who is to come," then why does he perform no Elijan miracles, we might ask. The truth is that his ministry of recognizing and responding to a Messiah who defies expectations to bring us life is the greatest miracle from the greatest prophet before Christ. Jim Wilson leads PrayNorthState with his wife, Diana. His PrayNorthState Radio is heard Saturdays at 8 a.m. and his Genesis Generation Radio program broadcasts from 6-8 p.m.Sundays on Radio KBLF Red Bluff, AM 1490. Father Jim is an Anglican priest and the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Central American missionaries to speak Sunday than 200. The congregation built a new sanctuary debt free under the Kendricks’ leadership. The Kendricks moved to Asuncion, Paraguay in 2005, with the purpose of starting a missions depart- ment for the national church. The Paraguayan Assemblies of God now has missionaries serving in Spain and Africa.
